Conclusion/Closing: Global warming is a huge issue that is scary but true. Global warming can be reduced by taking the earth’s needs into consideration. Humans can consume less and recycle to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is rapidly warming the earth. Global Warming Research Notes 1. Global warming is a big issue that concerns many. 2. Politicians use global warming to gain votes. They promise to “go green”. 3. Global warming can cause severe damage to the earth. 4. Even the slightest change in temperature can cause the environment to respond negatively. 5. Humans, animals, fish and birds are affected. 6. Global warming contributes to glacier melt. 7. Global warming affects the wind. 8. The wind affected by global warming affects the ocean current. 9. Change is ocean current allows for the warming of water temperature. 10. Water temperature changes the sex of fish. 11. Birds and other animals can become extinct from global warming. 12. People need to think of new ways to reduce carbon dioxide. 13. Carbon dioxide causes the thinning of the ozone layer. 14. The thinning of the ozone leads to higher earth temperatures. 15. Carpooling reduces carbon dioxide output. 16. Manufacturing plants produce a large amount of harmful pollution. Global Warming Global warming is an issue for every living being on the planet. Global warming is a topic that is the highlight of many conversations. Global warming does not discriminate and affects everyone regardless of race and location. Some issues that are becoming very popular in regards to global warming are climate change, animal habitats and natural disasters. To further discuss global warming, it is important to discuss what global warming is. Global warming can be identified by, “the overall retention of the sun’s heat surrounding earth” (Global Warming2008). Global warming is basically the result of too much pollution within earth’s atmosphere. The pollution causes the ozone layer to become thin. The thinning of the ozone layer allows earth’s climate to become warmer than usual. The slow increase in earth’s temperature creates an effect on earth’s resources. Global warming is said to have begun during the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution was a time during the 1800’s when manufacturing began to take over the world. According to, The Cambridge Dictionary of Scientist, “the increase of carbon dioxide has jumped overwhelmingly since the mid 1800’s.” Studies on carbon dioxide levels show that the concentration of carbon dioxide in ppmv’s has gone up by over one hundred. Many things that one may see and do everyday are contributors to an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The most common contributor is human transportation. Almost every type of human transportation emits carbon dioxide into the air. Planes, automobiles, trains and anything that burns fuel is a contributor to global warming. Automobiles are not the only contributor. Manufacturing plants are all over the world and can account for huge carbon dioxide emissions. An article by The New York Times explains, “Eating lunch in a cafeteria can cause global warming” (Rosenthal2010). One may contemplate the truth of the given claim. How can eating lunch at a cafeteria cause global warming? The answer is simple. Many of the foods in a cafeteria are produced in a manufacturing facility. Manufacturing facilities create carbon dioxide. When eating foods that have been made by creating harmful gasses, one is contributing to global warming. It is obvious that for everyday life to be completed, many must contribute to global warming. For example, an evaluation of a business workers day is observed. A business man wakes up and turns on the light. After turning on the light, a shower is turned on. After taking shower, coffee is prepared. After coffee it is time to walk out the door and get in the car and drive to work. At work, computers are used as well as other energy using office equipment. After work the business man drives home. While at home the business man uses many appliances and media equipment that use energy. It is easy to see how the average businessman’s day is made up of consuming things that produce carbon dioxide. In some way, each activity produces carbon dioxide. This is the perfect example of how global warming came to be such an issue.. Global warming has huge effects on the ocean. Water is a necessary for survival. Global warming takes its affects on so much more than just the air we breathe. The ocean, like many other water sources does not stand still. The ocean circulates. The circulation allows for water to remain fresh. The circulation of water is like natures own way of cleaning itself. “The winds of the air drive most of the oceans circulation” (Toggweiler2008). The warming climate changes the way that the winds blow. Since the winds are changed, so is the way that the ocean circulates. The changes in water circulation due to global warming have their affects on our oceans. The ocean cools and warms by circulation. It is obvious that the changes in circulation will have its affects on the ocean. Since the ocean makes up more than half of the earth, it is important to keep the ocean temperatures stable. Change in ocean temperature cause many problems. The warming of the ocean because of global warming has had its affects on ocean life. Coral in the Mediterranean, “is becoming bleached and no longer produces as vibrant of colors” (Global Changing Biology2005). The bleaching of the coral is not the only problem that affects the ocean. Fish are affected by the warming ocean. The sex of fish is dependent on the amount of males and the amount of females in the ocean. Colder and warmer waters produce more of one specific sex in fish. The affect this has on fish affect the population of fish. “An increase in water temperature of only 1-2 degrees affects in the sex of fish” (News in Brief2008). The water change can produce more males. The production of more male fish allows for less female fish. Less female fish results in less breeding. Global warming and the rise in earth’s temperature does exactly what is sounds like it can do, melt ice. The melting of large bodies of ice like glaciers is becoming an issue. The rapid melting of ice affects the animals that live on the glaciers. Penguins and polar bears are dependent on cold weather. The melting of glaciers leaves animals like polar bears and penguins with nowhere to live. Animals then have to learn to adapt to a warmer climate and run a chance of becoming extinct. Birds also have to learn to adapt to a changing climate. Birds that live in cooler climates migrate to warmer areas during cooler seasons. Many birds fly for days in flocks in order to make it to their desired destination. “Birds are highly affected by the change in temperature” (IndustryReport2011). Many birds will become extinct due to the fact that they are unable to adapt to current weather changes. It is easy to see the affects that global warming has on the environment and those living in it. Many argue that global warming is this and that, but facts hold the real answer. Scientists have been able to rely on facts to prove global warming for years. Global warming is a true and serious issue that cannot be avoided. Since it cannot be avoided due to over use of resources and increased manufacturing, plans need to be put in place to slow down the affects of global warming. Everyday people try to come up with new ideas to prevent and slow down global warming. Since humans are the blame for global warming, they are also the ones that can take responsibility in reversing and preventing further affects. Global warming has become the topic of discussion amongst many politicians. Politicians use global warming to earn votes. People are very concerned over the affects of global warming. The growing concern has caused voters to vote for politicians who promise to “go green”. Going green is a popular way to reduce ones carbon footprint. This is important because carbon dioxide is the number one contributor to global warming and the rise in earth’s temperature. WHAT CAN BE DONE Since most everything humans do needs energy, life changes can be made to try and use as little energy as possible. Every little thing counts when trying to assist in slowing down global warming. Many families have begun to use reusable grocery bags. This reduces the consumption of plastic. Teaching children to recycle allows for a future where consumers consume fewer plastics. The fewer plastics that are manufactured help reduce global warming. Dentist can even do their part in helping to go green and prevent future global warming. A Dentist named Kevin Henry is taking necessary steps to go green. Not only is his dental office going green, he is encouraging other dentist to go green as well. “Kevin Henry saves water and electricity in his dental office” (Henry 2011). Kevin changed the bulbs in the office to energy saving bulbs and does what he can to save water. These little things can also be done by homeowners. Many energy companies have been investing in ways to produce and distribute energy that produces less carbon dioxide. Wind energy is very popular for energy companies. Wind energy lets off no carbon dioxide. The wind, which is naturally produced, spins wind turbines that in return produce energy. The energy is used by consumers to light their homes and power electronics. The use of vehicles that produce carbon dioxide by driving, are lessened by walking or biking and carpooling. Car pooling is become very popular and can eliminate having to many cars on the road. Fewer cars mean less carbon dioxide in the environment. CONCLUSION Global warming is a growing and scary issue. After over one hundred years of climate change, the earth and animals are beginning to be affected. Changes need to take place to help reduce the further damage of global warming. Every human needs to do their part and help clean the mess that started long ago. If everyone makes a difference, global warming does not have to be such a big issue. Works Cited "Global Warming."
