Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has for some time now grown to be a very popular mode of phone communication and has started to outpace the traditional means like the public switched telephone networks due to the flexibility and the low-cost nature of VOIP. This flexibility has carried along with it some security concerns due to the various risks that are posed by the data convergence. Most of the risks that are posed by these networks are inherent in the backbone IP networks on which the VOIP architecture depends on.

There are however some additional security concerns. The combination of all these vulnerabilities in the systems has come to make the assurance of data security by the stakeholders who are concerned with the implementation of this technology a hard task to achieve and thus a task that warrants deep and insightful research. This calls for efforts to look into the various aspects that are faced by the implementers of the VOIP architecture and infrastructural facilities. At the same time, there is a great need for an analysis of the security challenges and the probable solutions that can work towards guiding the future establishment of formidable VOIP security mechanisms.

VoIP has gain popularity over the years and it is preferred as a more cost-effective and reliable means of making calls over long distances. However due to its rapid growth and development little has been taken into considerations to implement security features, to ensure such connectivity is secure for the data/information being relayed. Although there have been efforts to improve networking security, however, the services that are being offered use different software whose security features are not guaranteed.

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION            VOIP is a combination of various technologies that make it possible to have voice calls over the internet or through the use of other networks which have been specifically designed to handle data.
