Equipment to Measure the Static Coefficient of Friction - Term Paper Example

Summary
"Equipment to Measure the Static Coefficient of Friction" paper seeks to determine the static coefficient of friction. Friction is the force that affects motion and acts upon surfaces that come to contact with each other. These projects call to mind Newton’s three laws of motion…

There are three main kinds of friction: kinetic friction, rolling friction, and fluid friction. Kinetic friction is realized when two surfaces are slid across one another like when people walk. The rolling friction is the ultimate resistance produced when a rolling surface moves over a static surface like when a vehicle or a bicycle moves on the road. The fluid friction (also the viscosity friction) is the resistance resulting between a fluid and solid surface or other fluids. The fluid friction is well exemplified by when a boat is rows in the water.

Usually, the kinetic frictional force is less than the maximum value of the static frictional force. The static frictional force is given by Fs = µs N where µs is the coefficient of static friction and N is the normal force. The force at which one force gets pushed to another is called the normal force. It is proven that when an object is 70N in weight on the earth’s ground, its normal force is the same 70N of force. If life won’t be different then it would be definitely hard without friction since this is a very important aspect of daily life’s activities.

Our ability to grip and control objects is affected by the friction present between the hand and other materials. Writing and making inscriptions depends entirely on friction. A person can not hold a pencil in the hand without friction since it is bound to slip out as writing is attempted. Therefore, writing which is a compulsory academic activity entirely depends on friction. In understanding the nature of accidents, friction is the main concept. Surfaces of whatever kinds have a rough or bumpy surface Sells (1898).

Sells (1898) further avers that “these aforesaid microscopic ridges catch on one another when two objects are moving past each other” (p.76)However, an explanation is basic since the paper is restricted to the coefficient of static friction but there are many processes that take place, like chemical and electrical bonding. The friction amount differs across the various types of materials and it can be determined by the coefficient of friction in which the formula has been given earlier.
