Designing a box of tricks Your name Subject Date Introduction This paper will be presenting a design for a box of tricks with enough mechanisms which will be used to turn the input clockwise rotation of the wheel. Shaft, drives and belts of gizmos will be also used so as to turn the wheel into an oscillating motion. The design involved will match that of a car as this will take into consideration the mass of the wheel and the static stress exerted on the shaft. An illustration below shows Consideration on how the rotation should then transfer into a translation will be put into place. In addition, mounting items inside the box will be considered so as to avoid floating in the mid-air. Bearings will be put to allow for more efficient movement. Shift levers have to be designed strong enough so that the force needed to affect the shift is strong. The ratio of the lever has to be in relation to how much force is required from the box operator. When the ratio is not effective properly, it makes the box operator to require too much effort. So the shaft has to be heavier and stronger to minimise the operator using the extra force. When there are manually belts of gizmos, the clutch mechanisms mounted on the steering column give out some unforeseen problems. While designing, it’s good to note that the reaction force on the lever is through the wheel and again engaging on how that force is reacted through the wheel and finally into the box supports. Based on the input velocity and output frequency, calculations will be as follows: The design makes sure that the rotation of the box mounts items inside the box so as to avoid floating in air. The bearings that normally allow the movement of the box to be easier and the calculations below are based on the selected mechanisms. Wheel diameter = 100mm Driver wheel diameter = 10mm Angular speed of driver= 2rad/sec So the speed of shaft= Diameter of driver wheel = 100X2 = 20 Diameter of driver wheel 10 When the output frequency is 1Hz and the oscillating shaft is 0.62mm then we calculate the frequency; 1Hz=2× π × ω×0.31 ω =1 therefore: 2× π×0.31 = 0.51333648rad/sec The speed of shaft = 0.51333648rad/sec and the displacement = Xm × cos(ϭ×T) The materials used to make the box of tricks product The materials used to make the box are locally available and they can be accessed with much ease. They are cartons, coloured plastics, paper, wheel and shaft, bearing: bevel gears, crank and universal joint which assist the box shaft to rotate without causing any friction Final Development Sketches The finished design should be of a contemporary finish with a texture that is smooth. The chosen colors should suitable for any individual as this can be red, black, yellow, blue or other colors or mixture of many colors to make it more colorful. The end product should be a striking color and its durability must be emphasized. The final product design will take the shape of the illustrations below: Discussion of the final design Aesthetics The final design should be flexible enough to operate. It should be functional as this forms the basis of the usage of the box. The design is easy to use for the box as the materials are easily and readily available. Its functionality is the key as its easier to open and perform any trick with it. Material limitation The box of tricks design has its material limitation. Due to the paper and carton usage it cannot be exposed to damp or wet surface because wetness can destroy the box and this limit its function ability. Ease of functionality The design enables the user no to slow down while operating or limit the user. It’s a design that when applied well, it offers more than the existing solution to the user. The materials used for the final design of the box should be the correct size as identified and designed. Correct material helps in safety and easing the functionality of the box. If the materials used are the wrong size, they may fail on the final usage. Description of the Box of tricks The box of tricks contains an empty steel container with wall thicknesses of 2mm. A door has been designed The wheel spin velocity is 2 rad/s. With the wheel is spinning, the 100mm diameter wheel is connected to a 10mm diameter shaft which passes into the box through the 45degrees face . When the wheel rotates, it enables the shaft to rotate. This is made possible by the shaft which is connected to the box through a bearing which fixes into the box . So as to make the oscillate possible, through the full cycle in and out of the box at a frequency of 1Hz, returning to its start position, the shaft is connected to a gear which changes the direction of motion at 90 degrees to the another shaft. The design has considered how the shaft passes into the box and the beam passes through the slot. This is through the frequency of the output beam which is Hz of which will be determined by the motion of the wheel. Another shaft is suspended on the other end of the box with a fixed bearing to the wall of the box .A gizmo belt and the wheel are the ones used to regulate the speed of operation. This is through the shaft which connects a wheel which connects another wheel. The other end of the belt wheel is connected to a shaft which has a crank of which the universal joint is attached to it in order to produce reciprocating motion of the output beam. This is a design that I have used to design the box of tricks. Advantages of using this Box of tricks Design It is simple to design as it normally uses readily available components There are all types of bearings and sleeves supporting the shaft which can be used depending on the size of the box of tricks. When the design is applied, it makes the box to be easy to be constructed. The design is easy to understand and this makes it easy for any person to construct. Disadvantages of using this Box of tricks Design Has a repeat problems in proper steering support May not support heavy components The cost of maintenance is a bit high When pulling down the steering wheel can become non compliance Just like any other moving object such as car, the design when used to make the Box of tricks requires regular service due to the gears and wheels connections. This is terms of lubrication and tightening of joints should be done regularly. Conclusion Though the design is simple, the technique has to be followed keenly so as to produce the exact application.
