This paper presents a report on the findings of the differences between the structural designs in the building code between the American building code and the Australian building code. The building code is there defined varyingly but the basic definition is, therefore, a compilation of the rule and regulations that are adopted by different governments that do have reasonable jurisdictional control over the design and the construction of the buildings, repair, alteration, material quality, use and occupancy in relation to the factors in building as per their jurisdictions (Loo & Sanaul, 2010, pp.45-65).The AS 3600-2009 is an Australian building and concrete standards prepared by the Standards of the Australian Committee and concrete structures.

The scope of AS 3600-2009 under section (1.1), sets minimum requirements for design and constructions requiring plain concrete pedestals as well as footings. Moreover, the standards provide a detailed overview of concrete structures especially for those structures with or without steel reinforcement and prestressed tendons basing on the structural principles of engineering mechanics. The other objective of Australian concrete structures AS 3600-2009 actually is to provide performance criteria against which the finished structures can be assessed for compliance with the relevant design requirements (AS Committee 3600, 2009, pp.34-50).Primarily, the AS 3600-2009 are appropriate for structures other than buildings and therefore the Australian Standard concrete structures have been specifically formulated concrete structures.

According to the AS 3600-2009 code for cast-in-place footings, foundation walls and slabs-on-ground for one and two-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses) and their accessory structures, designs and construction in accordance with AS 3600-2009 shall be permitted(AS Committee 3600,2009, pp.34-50).The building code ACI 318-08 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary covers the materials, design, and construction of structural concrete used in various buildings and in some situations where applicable in non-binding structures.
