Module Personal and Social Competence Emotional intelligence refers to an individual’s capa to actualize what emotions andrelationships in relation to their ability to solve problems and reason. It entails the ability to recognize emotions, experience them and deal with them. Emotions are a key area to consider in work environments (Lang 15). This is contrary to the popular belief that emotions have no part to play in the work place. If appropriately managed, they could have a positive impact but if not properly managed, they could have a negative influence in the form of decline in the staff morale and production. Personal competence is the individual’s belief in their own abilities. On the other hand, social awareness is the capacity to understand other people’s feelings. This essay discusses two of the weakest competencies in my understanding. Personal Competence Select one of the weakest competencies One of the weakest competences is intentionality. Define and explain the competency The chosen competency is intentionality and it refers to the ability to act and think deliberately on purpose. In the modern world, individuals have the free will to undertake the actions that they want based on their intention to do so. Intention determines their willingness to undertake specific actions in the work environment (Lang 22). For instance, there individuals that intend to beat the set target within the work place while there are those that intend to laze around and watch the others do the work. Intentionality determines whether and individual attains the set goals and objectives. The intentionality competency also defines the individual’s willingness to do what has been instructed by their superiors as well as their work mates. This competency falls under self-management as it dictates how well an individual manages their intentions towards achieving their personal success and the overall success for the entity. However, in comparison to other competencies, it was found to be the weakest. Explain the impact the competency can have on your performance and career Intentionality has had a huge a huge influence on my career as well as performance. To start with if, there are tasks that are assigned to me on a regular basis. These are not in line with my specialty and schedule and I usually feel violated. Since I do not have the intention to undertake them, I perform dismally and this results into a conflict between my superiors and I. On the other hand, if I have the intention to perform a give task, it comes along with motivation and my performance in such tasks is simply outstanding. Intentionality has had both a positive and negative impact on my career (Lang 45). For instance, there are tasks that I have performed exceptionally well in and this has given me recognition among my work mates as well as by the management. Such instances have certainly had a positive impact on my career. Conversely, intentionality has had a negative impact on my career. For example, in the instances that I gave a dismally performance, I was reprimanded by the management and this had a negative impact on my career. What specific actions will you take or improve your competency? I need to work on intentionality since it is my weakest competency. This is by ensuring that I have a positive attitude towards the stipulated tasks. Secondly, I would improve my intentionally by asking for support from my team members in tasks that I am not motivated to undertake (Lang 34). Thirdly, I will be paying more attention to the outcomes of a given task rather the willingness to take part in it. Fourthly, I will work towards my personal development. What value do you see in improving this competency? It is imperative for me to improve on my intentionality competency based on the fact that it is important for my performance and career. To start with, intentionality will give me the vigor to undertake tasks that are outside my spatiality (Lang 34). It will give me the strength to act even in instances when I do not intend to undertake a given task and when I intend to do so, I will perform as required. Finally, intentionality will enable me to be a better worker and colleague. Social Competence Select one of the weakest competencies The second weakest competency that was chosen is coaching and mentoring others. Define and explain the competency This entails making out the needs of other individuals and reinforcing their abilities. Coaching and mentoring is an important aspect in contemporary work environment. This mainly applies to new employees that need to be trained on company policies and how thing are run within a given work environment. It also applies to employees that have worked in the entity for a long time and may have lost their enthusiasm in the job. Training and coaching is also important when a given change takes place within a company (Lang 44). For instance, if new technology is introduced within a company, the employees should be trained on how to use it. Employees need constant training and coaching to improve their skills and performance in various areas. This is mainly done within the company or companies pay for the employees to be trained in other institutions. Training and coaching are important in sharpening my skills and abilities are this is one of my weakest competency. Explain the impact the competency can have on your performance and career Training and coaching can have a positive impact on my performance in this work place. This is because training enables me to cope with changes within the firm in technology as well as in the operations. This improves my competence while using new technology and has a positive impact on my productivity (Lang 67). Training and coach also helps me to perform better within a team setting. I am able to cooperate better with other members of my team, understand them and work towards the company’s goals and objectives. Training and coaching facilitates how I relate with my colleagues and management. Training and coaching has contributed positively to my career. I am now a better worker with diverse skills and abilities. My career has developed through training and coaching as I am able to take up more demanding tasks comfortably. What specific actions will you take or improve your competency? I will take up training and coaching in to improve my abilities mainly in the areas that I am weak at. The company provides training and coaching on the work force on various aspects that often go through changes such as technology as well as leadership and management. I also intend to advance my education by pursuing a master’s degree. This will help me improve on my skills and abilities and help me get a better application of the lessons learnt in the course of my education. I intend to get a mentor who will train me on how to be a better. What value do you see in improving this competency? Improving this competency will improve on my skills and help me to perform my duties better. It will contribute to my value as an employee as well because I will be more marketable in the job market.
