Probing of culture Culture can be defined as the attitude and manners that are attributed to a particular community or organization. It includes beliefs, customs, arts, habits, behaviors etc of a particular social group (Blumenthal , 1937). The comparatively high stage of the development of a human society is known as civilization. People of a particular territory, always posses some cultural characteristics that indicate their relation with the ancient civilizations. The civilization i.e. the culture of people of the same race can be determined by the ancient remains, especially in the form of written texts.

The written texts can easily reveal the way of living of ancient people, thus we can compare easily their civilization with our present age: the life styles, trade and commerce, agriculture, clothing etc. Present era can be conserved in the form of books therefore we can say that books are the preservatives of our culture and tradition. Books contain unique characteristics and can be the representative of not only the thoughts but also of customs and religion which further lead to a civilization.

A culture can be grown by following the rules of the society. It not only determines the sovereignty of a nation but also adds admiration for the pioneers. But with the passage of time it requires some modifications to face new challenges of life. As the world is revolutionizing, mental thoughts should also be polished, so that the people can be able to survive in modern era. It is necessary to maintain the sovereignty of a nation that we should go through our historical remains especially the written text that gives us information about our civilization (Calvert, 2002, p 29).

We must be well-aware about our past status. It may also be helpful to compare it with present age and learn lesson from the history so that the blunders of past may not be repeated and we become able to welcome a bright future. The aim of our educational programs in cultural and social fields lack creativity and limitless thoughts to reorganize the boundaries of our cultural and social restrictions. The books about the ancient civilizations and cultural ideas are valuable to understand the origination of our social, moral and ethical values; however, a number of restrictions the books talk about are obsolete.

The books talk about the facts which were true for the ancient people where women and men were treated differently; minorities were not treated as equally as they are treated today and so on. The students must then be taught about the idea of flexibility in their attitudes when social issues are concerned. They must be taught to stand against the negative attributes of the society and challenge even the most powerful for the good of the social well being. The lessons of peace and humanity must also involve the lessons to fight against brutality and inequality that prevail in the society.

Cultural study programs and lessons of civilization must be reorganized in a way which provide some practical illustrations, experience and understanding about them. Reading historical civilization books seems less productive than visiting historical places, museums and viewing ancient products. Similarly a lecture about cultural problems may be less productive than students identifying those problems themselves. The quizzes, surveys, researches and information collection from culturally rich areas may attract young people towards these subjects.

The use of creative ideas like those mentioned above may help developing young generation’s interest towards such educational fields. The books that are included in the curriculum are undoubtedly helpful in understanding the meaning and concepts of culture, civilization and history of one’s culture.
