How to Write a Movie Review

Have you ever watched a motion picture and went to comment about it online? Well, there will come a time in your high school or college education to do it, only then, in the form of a detailed movie review. And note, like any other academic task you partake in school, there will be marks awarded for this assignment.

So, do you know how to write a movie review? If not, we are going to show you how to craft a high-quality critical assessment that is up to par with those you find in leading movie review sites. Note, while this task might seem quite straightforward, it requires much time and sufficient organization. And lucky for you, our in-depth and useful instructions will come in handy. Learn all you have to know how to be an excellent critic right below.

What Is a Movie Review: Defining the Task

When asked what is a movie review, base your answer on this. It is an in-depth and balanced synthesis of a film or documentary you have watched. Good critical articles explore the themes explored in various movies as well as technical production issues, giving the reader an excellent idea of what the motion picture is all about.

How long should a movie review be? Typically, the wording for this task is capped at 1,000 words. And while it might seem like something you can jump straight into and finish in no time, do not do that. You need ample time to prepare. This way, you can find a movie review example to guide you, re-watch the flick to get it better or identify a quote that carries the entire essence of the film.

All told, understand that the purpose of a critical appraisal is to communicate the ideas portrayed within it to the reader. As such, it is quite easy to find students crafting critique articles that share their personal opinions rather than provide objective assessments of the movies. So, while crafting your paper, your intention should be to give an unbiased overview of the film.

How to Review a Movie Like an Expert Critic

That time you sit down with popcorn to watch a motion picture that you’ve longed for can be one of the most exciting minutes of your life. But what if you were asked to write a well-thought movie review after watching it? The critical article you see on movie review websites may look somewhat easy. However, when you get down to writing one yourself, especially for academic purposes, it can become difficult.

But don’t panic- here are tips on how to review a movie like an experienced critic:

  • First, watch it

You can’t write about a film that you haven’t watched. So, watch it twice or more times, depending on how long you take to understand it.

  • Take notes

Write down all the important things you got from the film after you are done watching it. These could be notes about certain characters, critical moments in the plot, a part of speech, etc. You don’t want to wait too long as you might forget some details.

  • Investigate the background of the motion picture

Once you know what the movie is all about, go online and research it. Check out who the filmmaker is, what inspired them to make the film, the filming location, other movies made by the same producer/ director, etc.

  • Create a structure/ outline for your paper

Make a skeleton of what your movie review will look like. Include all the main ideas.

  • Write a catchy introduction

The intro should mention the title, director, genre, and date of release in your movie review. Also highlight awards and recognitions it has won, if there are any. Finish with a thesis statement.

  • Summarize the plot (give your impression of it)

Describe the film briefly, making sure not to disclose the ending in your movie review. Give your thoughts and feelings about scenes, scores, and characters.

  • Talk a little about the film making

Talk about cinematography, casting, editing, sound, visual effects, etc. Help the reader understand the techniques used in making the motion picture in your movie review.

  • Analyze the Film

Understand and relay the deeper meaning you’ve derived from the feature film. Analyze emphasized or repeated elements, key scenes, character attributes, and symbolism.

  • Conclude and proofread

Finish your movie review by mentioning the things you liked most about the film. Also, say the type of audience that would enjoy watching it, making sure to give your reasons. After you are done writing, go through the movie review and remove any grammatical mistakes present.
