Australia World Cup Bid Customer Inserts His/Her Name Customer Inserts Grade Course Customer Inserts Tutor’s Name 9th June, 2014 Introduction The World Cup is among the most prestigious event in the world and it attracts a lot visitors and tourists to host nations. There are several benefits and pitfalls to hosting the World Cup in terms of economic, political and social changes that result from hosting this global event. Australia lost two bids for hosting the World Cup in the years 2018 and 2022 yet the country is considering bidding to host the 2026 World Cup. This proposal will study the major factors, aims and objectives of Australia’s proposed 2026 World Cup bid. Aims and Objectives The aims and objectives of Australia submitting and rebidding for the 2026 World Cup will be based upon these factors/ reasons; a) To host the World in anticipation of job creation b) Host the World Cup due to availability of proper infrastructure for this event c) Host the World Cup due to favourable climatic conditions for the event. d) Economic boost and growth that will be created by hosting the World Cup e) Past Experience gained in hosting similar global sporting events Literature Review The World Cup is one of the most prestigious events in the sporting calendar and history due to its effect on the economy of a nation. The World Cup has been organized in different countries and regions of the world over a period of 50 years. The legacy that has been left by the World Cup is so enormous and it has benefitted a lot of individuals and countries. The expected costs and benefits of hosting the World Cup cannot be quantified easily as witnessed by the showcase in South Africa in the year 2010. The World Cup brought a lot economic benefits to South Africa and other countries such as United States with the 1994 World Cup in Atlanta (Chisari, 2010, pp. 142-146). Hosting and organizing a global scale event like the World Cup requires adequate planning on issues concerning infrastructure, security and cultural collaboration (Dauncey, 2014, p. 199). The 2010 World Cup was a showcase for the world on proper planning and implementation of a successful World Cup event. South Africa was well prepared in hosting the World Cup and it went out of its way in ensuring the event became a success. For instance, in terms of cost the country spent over $ 3.7 billion on infrastructure and other planning issues. However, within the period of the World Cup the country recouped over $ 3 billion leading to a successful event for the nation. Consequently, it is the long-term effects that South Africa benefitted from that matter in organizing the World Cup. A research conducted on the effects of the 2010 World Cup realized that 96% of the participants recommended South Africa as a popular tourist destination. Moreover, the infrastructure such as the hotels and other amenities benefitted a lot from the hosting of the World Cup in South Africa (Horne, 2013, p. 156). The culture of the host nation matters a lot as was witnessed in South Africa which is an Anglophone country with warm and welcoming visitors. Australia is one of the economically empowered nations that love sport which is exemplified by the numerous sporting events held in the country. For instance, Australians have actively participated in World Cup Cricket, Rugby and Football events (Lisi, 2011, p. 104). Therefore, the country which enjoys a favourable climate throughout the year should have an opportunity of bidding for the World Cup. Australia has a proper and well built infrastructure that can support the organization of the World Cup (Wadhwaney, 2009, p. 114). Consequently, hosting the World Cup will create an economic boost for the country while at the same time the Australian tourism industry will benefit greatly from the country hosting the World Cup. If proper organization is undertaken, as witnessed by the 2010 South Africa World Cup then Australia will reap tremendously from the event (Louw, 2012, p. 186). Methodology In the process of collecting information necessary for the construction of the research proposal, we had to conduct a research methodology on the organization of the World Cup. Due to the scope of the research, we are going to make use of questionnaires that will be used in the process of gathering views and information from football administrators, economists and general public on the issues to address in the process of bidding for the World Cup. The use of targeted questionnaires to participants is a good idea since it gives the opportunity for professionals to give facts and information required in the process of bidding for the World Cup (Susan, 2010, p. 165). The research study for Australia’s bid for the World cup was conducted by selecting 400 football administrators, fans and experts based in different global locations. The research study was to investigate the aspects and factors to include in the preparation of the 2026 World Cup bid for Australia. Questionnaires were the best suitable methodology to study the bid process for the 2026 Australian World Cup bid. This is due to ease of construction and distribution of questionnaires among different people located in different parts of the world (Joo, 2011, pp. 42 - 48). Data Collection Methods In the process of data collection we must make use of questionnaires in the process of collecting data from the participants. The survey was conducted on the different stakeholders involves in the mining industry. A set of structured questions would be put to different respondents in the field of mining in a particular manner. In order to get conclusive results that satisfy all sides of the research we had to make use of questionnaires. This is because making use of questionnaires guarantees that the responses that will be collected will serve the purpose of research (Vijver, ‎ 2007, pp. 71-75). However, in most cases as in our case, the use of questionnaires was borne out the need to save time, money and generate expediency in the issue of data collection. These questionnaires were put to different stakeholders in the world of football management to ensure that the information and answers obtained from these professional would assist in the bidding and management of the Australia 2026 World Cup bid (Bell, 2010, p. 143). The reason for choosing questionnaires was informed due to the ease of construction and analysis of the same through the use of different analytical methods. Questionnaires use was appropriate for this study due to its flexibility in terms of time and cost unlike other data collection methods such as interviews which are costly and time consuming. Sampling Sampling was conducted on the selection of the respondents to participate in this study proposal. Sampling was the best technique due to the scope of the study which required extensive information and knowledge on bidding for the World Cup. Therefore, sampling allowed for the selection of the best respondents for the proposal study (Israel, 2009, p. 116). Past studies on hosting and bidding for the World Cup were compared to the current bid that was about to be prepared by Australia for the 2026 World Cup. Sampling ensures that the data collected is accurate and that measures are consistent with the set out and globally accepted standards (Schwankert, 2013, p. 79). In the case of our proposal study, we made use of quota sampling to ensure that the results obtained from the study were representative of the scenario in other global locations. The idea behind using a quota sampling was based on fact that the scope of the study was huge and thus we had to sample and select respondents who had the knowledge of bidding, managing and hosting the World Cup (Susan, 2010, p. 196). Quota sampling was appropriate since it would restrict itself to the aims and objectives of the proposal bid study. Data Analysis Data analysis was conducted by sampling and grouping results based on the answers provided in the process of preparing for the World Cup bid. Out of the 400 selected participants who were sampled to undertake the study, 342 participants gave responses to the questions mailed to them. The process of data analysis involved the use of bi-variate associations which involved confirmatory data analysis (Markovits, 2010, p. 128). From the data analysis, we noted that 65% of the respondents were aware of Australia’s failed bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Moreover, around 88% of the respondents were aware of the details and the factors that are vital in the preparation of a major global sporting event such as the World Cup. For instance, 94% of the respondents were in favour of the climatic conditions in Australia for hosting the World Cup (Chidester, 2012, p. 107). Other major issues that were covered in the data analysis include security considerations, infrastructure and viability of hosting the World Cup. In the process of analysing data for validity and reliability purpose we have to assess the ethical considerations of the bid process. Politics and corruption are factors that affect the bid process for 2026 World Cup bid for Australia. This is because World Cup host nations are chosen by FIFA governing body members from different global locations (Iyebote, 2008, p. 212). As a result, Australia’s bid has to factor in political lobbying and be aware of corruption influencing the process from other competing nations for the World Cup bid. Validity and Reliability The results of the data analysis showed that Australia was prepared for hosting the World Cup due to satisfaction of several considerations. For instance, 96% of the respondents agreed with the fact that Australia is a sporting nation which has hosted several top notch sporting activities such as the Rugby World Cup. Most of the respondents’ answers such on issued concerning infrastructure, climate and preparedness of Australia in hosting the World Cup were in tandem with responses and scoring given by the World Cup selection committees (Niehaus, 2013, p. 107). Most of the responses in the process of collecting information from the respondents were reliable and valid due to the vast experience of the respondents on bidding and hosting the World Cup. The results were valid since they accurately correlated to the figures and samples obtained from other World Cups (Scherer, 2013, p. 89). These responses obtained from the respondents were reliable since they considered factors such as inflation, climatic changes and trends in the global sporting field. Conclusion The World Cup is a premier sporting event that is held every four years and this has the potential of changing the economic and social environment of a country. Australia has in the past failed in its two bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. However, the country has the potential of hosting this premier event due to its favourable climatic conditions and the fact that the country has organized similar sporting events in the past such as the Rugby World Cup. The economic boost and multiplier effects due to hosting the World Cup should be the major motivating factors driving the country to bid for the 2026 World Cup.
