The Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in Promoting Smoking Cessation – Research Proposal Example
The Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in Promoting Smoking Cessation Introduction Tobacco consumption is duly considered to be one of the causes ofhigh rate death in the United States. Millions of people lose their lives due to the ill effects of tobacco consumption and thus require a proper counseling to cope up with such threats. In this regard, nurses play a vital role in raising awareness and providing teachings on smoking cessation to the people based on which they can mitigate the issue (Newhouse et al., 2011). With this concern, the proposed research elaborates about the role of advanced nursing practice in promoting the teachings of smoking cessation.
Background and Significance of the Problem
Tobacco consumption is injurious for health of a human body, as this lead towards causing several health diseases such as cancer. Thus, it is vital for the people to understand the negative effects of smoking for leading their lives in a better and healthy manner. The problem of smoking is much critical to consider, as it not only affects the person smoking, but also the entire surroundings. In this context, the knowledge and counseling of nurses is important to increase the effectiveness of smoking cessation to make the world smoke free and make people to live. It is projected that with the deliverance of proper nursing facilities, smoking and several health issues can be reduced. It is strongly believed that nurse practitioners work for the safety of the people. The nurses need to take into concern varied teachings based on smoking cessation in order to form, develop and maintain a smoke free environment (Newhouse et al., 2011).
The problem of smoking is vital, as it leads to several health issues and also death. This can be justified with reference to the fact that the numbers of death have increased due to smoking and in this regard, the integration of smoking cessation by nurses proves to be much effective (Rice & Stead, 2012). It will be vital to mention in this similar concern that the role of the nurses will be to convince people towards quitting smoking and motivating them to take due treatments. It will be important for the nurses to provide adequate mental support to people so that they are encouraged to reduce the use of tobacco and lead a healthy life in future.
Statement of the Problem and Purpose of the Study
In relation to the above context, the major problem is to understand the negative consequences of smoking and thus realizing the need for delivering the teachings related to smoking cessation. Moreover, the problem statement for the proposed study can be ascertained as allowing advanced nurses to help individuals in evading smoking by providing effective care and introducing varied counseling programs. With this concern, the prime purposes of this proposed research study include determining the role of advanced nursing practice in promoting the teaching of smoking cessation amid the individuals. It is worth mentioning that nurses can illustrate and educate people regarding smoking cessation under various settings that might aid in resolving distinct issues that are associated with smoking. The purpose is to benefit people by promoting the teaching of smoking cessation amid them with the help of presenting valuable information about the ill-effects of smoking. Altering behaviors as well as attitudes of people through programs and counseling by registered nurses may result in improving their health conditions in future (West et al., 2014; Rice & Stead, 2012).
The objectives of the proposed research study have been explicitly mentioned in detail in the following:
To elaborate about the relevance of counseling by nurses on smoking cessation
To identify the role of nurses in teaching about smoking cessation
To integrate the notion of smoking cessation in regular nursing practices
The research questions for the proposal study have been stated hereunder:
What is the role of advanced practice nurse in promoting smoking cessation?
What are the implications of nursing interference on smoking cessation?
Hypotheses (Alternative and Null)
The research hypotheses for the proposed study have been depicted below:
H0 (Null hypothesis): Nurses’ intervention of teaching smoking cessation leads to a smoke free environment with positive health outcomes
H1 (Alternative hypothesis): Nurses’ intervention of teaching smoking cessation does not lead towards a smoke free environment with positive health consequences
With reference to the hypotheses developed above, the dependent and independent variables can be ascertained as the teaching of smoking cessation and the role of advanced practice nurse respectively.
It is projected that effective counseling, knowledge and promotional activities perform by the nurses will eventually lead towards smoking free environment. Specially mentioning, the teaching of smoking cessation is deemed to be a dependent variable, as this tends to rely upon the efforts and active participation of the nurses towards determining the behavioral attitudes of the people.
