Download file to see previous pages The aims of this study will be to (a) determine the factors that affect the uptake of learning management systems by female academic staff in Saudi Arabian universities; (b) to find out why there is fewer female academic staff in Saudi Arabian universities using learning management systems compared to males, and (c) find out what can be done to increase learning management systems adoption by female academic staff in these universities.

It is important to note the differences in the adoption of learning management systems between male and female academic staff of universities may be linked to the nature of the education system of the Kingdom. According to Asiri, Mahmud, Bakar and Ayub (2012), the education system in Saudi Arabia – like all other domains of the Kingdom’s public life – is premised on the total separation of staff and students by gender. For this reason, educational institutions have to make available separate structures and staff for female and male students. This consequently puts a considerable strain on available resources and is one of the reasons why there are fewer female instructors than male ones at all academic levels (p. 126). This statement provides an answer as to why there are fewer female staff in academic institutions but does not explain why fewer female academic staff use learning management systems.

Another point of view on the same question would be to look at the interest of male and female learners in using learning management systems. A study by Zakaria, Jamal, Bisht, and Koppel (2013) on a related topic revealed that female students primarily used the Internet to chat with their family members and friends and to learn new things other than those relating to their education, whereas male students used the Internet primarily for learning activities. The study also found that male students made use of Blackboard more for learning as compared to female learners. Hence, there no is doubt that the disparity between male and female university academic staff’s use of learning management systems is attributable to various factors.
