Extract of sample "Nutritional Facts about Packaged Foods"

I chose Three Sisters’ Honey ‘n Oats, Eden Organic’s Small Red Beans, and Amy’s Cornmeal Crust Pizza, which I use for breakfast, lunch, and dinner respectively. Breakfast: Three Sisters’ Honey ‘n Oats             Total calories contained in cereal = 120 calories                                                 Total fat    = 1.

5 grams             Since,                    1 gram of fat   = 9 calories Thus,                1.5 grams of fat    = 9* 1.5 = 13.5 calories Hence,           actual fat content   = (13.5/120) * 100 % = 11.

25 % Also,                       Total protein   = 2 grams Since,                 1 gram of protein = 4 calories Thus,                 2 grams of protein = 2* 4 = 8 calories Hence,       actual protein content = (8/120) * 100 % = 6.

66 % Lunch: Eden Organic’s Small Red Beans             Total calories contained in cereal = 100 calories                                                 Total fat    = 0.5 grams             Since,                    1 gram of fat   = 9 calories Thus,                0.

5 grams of fat    = 9* 0.5 = 4.5 calories Hence,           actual fat content   = (4.5/100) * 100 % = 4.5 % Also,                       Total protein   = 6 grams Since,                 1 gram of protein = 4 calories Thus,                 6 grams of protein = 6* 4 = 24 calories Hence,       actual protein content = (24/100) * 100 % = 24 % Dinner:  Amy’s Cornmeal Crust Pizza             Total calories contained in cereal = 370 calories                                                 Total fat    = 19 grams             Since 1 gram of fat   = 9 calories Thus,                 19 grams of fat   = 9* 19 = 171 calories Hence,           actual fat content  = (171/370) * 100 % = 46.

21 % Also,                       Total protein  = 10 grams Since,               1 gram of protein  = 4 calories Thus,              10 grams of protein = 10* 4 = 40 calories Hence,      actual protein content = (40/370) * 100 % = 10.

81 % Conclusion In the case of Small Red Beans, the company states, in the printed nutritional facts, that 30 grams of cereal contain 0.4% of fats (obtained by calculations made using the weight of the product and not the calories); whereas, actually 4.5% of calories are being derived from fat. Also, the protein content as stated by the company (using calculations based on weight) is 4.6% whereas it actually is 24%. Similarly, in the case of Honey ‘n Oats and Cornmeal Crust Pizza, the fat and protein content as calculated by the company do not match the actual calculations made using the number of calories instead of weight.
