According to Guiso, Monte, Sapienza, and Zingales (2008) and Else-Quest, Hyde, and Linn, (2010), gender disparities in academic performance, particularly in mathematics, exist in the world. Because low performance in mathematics can discourage females from taking an occupation that pays well like engineering, it is plausible that the inferior mathematics achievement of female learners enhances the persistence of gender salary difference. The identification of the causes of gender disparities in academic achievement is, thus, a significant economic concern.

This is so particularly relative importance of societal variables instead of biological factors that influence gender difference in mathematics achievement has just been a focus of economic study. This study examined both the negative and positive effects of single-sex education on mathematics achievement among students in grade seven. It also intended to explore some of the effects of a coeducational learning environment on students’ performance in mathematics. Currently, there still insufficient attention is given to peer group composition’s effects on student performance, especially in mathematics.

This can be due to inadequate and appropriate information on the same. Gender composition does not differ considerably across schools or classes, self-selection challenges often plague the information; hence, making it difficult to discover the causes of the noticeable gaps in academic achievement.Information from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a countrywide representative sample without sample selection challenges, indicate that boys constantly outperform girls in their fourth and eighth grades for the last two decades, although the extent of the difference is smaller (Lee, Grigg, & Dion, 2007).

The mass of evidence in the past 50 years recommends that the gender difference in mathematic is nonexistent before children start schooling, but is great and important in the middle school years and the future years.
