The paper “ Assessing Stress among Health Science University Students and Professionals” is a fascinating variant of a research paper on psychology. The transition of students from a school environment to a university environment could cause a psychological, academic and social shock to them, due to the fact that there is a vast difference between school education and college education, students face several challenges that result from stress (Hamaideh, 2011). There are two major themes and characteristics of modern stress theory. First, the presence of a mechanism through which individuals evaluate events in terms of their meanings that are complete to their psychological and well being.
Secondly, individuals regulate their internal states and engage these internal mechanisms to compensate for perturbations induced by external factors. Stress is mostly described as a feeling of being overwhelmed, being highly strung, tense and worried. Physically, people can experience heart palpitations, tightening of the chest, hot and cold flushes, when feelings of stress and anxiety take over. There are many stressful situations and demand occurring in an individual's life, but the individual's perception of being 'stressed' is related to their believed inability to cope with a stressful event.
Stressor refers to the factors that cause psychological, physical stress (Hancock & Szalma, 2008). Stressors are classified in terms of their frequency and duration. Some are classified with regard to sudden trauma, chronic stressors, and daily hassles. The main aim of this report is to establish a stress level among university students. 2.0Specific objectives are as follows; To assess stress levels in Students enrolled in Nursing and health-related subjects To assess distress levels in students enrolled in Nursing and health-related subjects To compare distress levels in students enrolled in Nursing and health-related subjects To investigate coping mechanisms in students enrolled in Nursing and health-related subjects 3.0Literature Review There are several types of research that have been done on the stress that is being experienced by students, causes of stress among students and how these stress are being controlled.
Hamaideh (2011) carried out a study aimed at identifying stress and reactions to stress among university students. The study examined the correlations between stressors and study variables. The study result shows that self-imposed stressors are the highest stress among students followed by pressure.
The cognitive responses were found to be the highest response to stressors experienced by students. Another study conducted by Chen, Wong, Ra, and Gilson (2009) described the relationship between college stress and strategy that can be used in coping with this stress. The study found that psychological well-being has an inverse relationship with college stress while a positive coping strategy has a buffering effect. Laurence, William, and Eiland (2009) conducted a survey of over 453 graduate students. Over 25% of students show depressive symptoms 30% higher than other people who are not students. A systematic review and meta-analysis study was also performed on the prevalence of depression among Iranian university students in 2013, concluding that depression is common in university students with no superiority between males and females, and much higher in single students then married.
Therefore the aims of this study are important, as these previous studies show that they were more focused on ‘ anxiety and ‘ depression', but there seems to be a gap in the literature on measuring ‘ distress levels, so we want to find out why students seemed to be suffering with stress, we wanted to know whether students were more distressed than other people in society.
We also wondered whether students were stressed to the point of distress. This study aimed at knowing these problems in detail.
