Extract of sample "Genetically Modified Foods"

Genetically modified foods have elicited a great debate on the need and safety as regards human health since the mid-'90s (Friends of the Earth, 2003). Proponents site the extensive safety tests conducted on these foods before approval for consumption. Government agencies like the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture ensure that GM food manufacturers observe the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act which protects consumer safety (Winter & Gallegos, 2013). There is also potential in Genetically Modified foods to counter food insecurity among third world countries and the World’s most vulnerable communities.

Freedman (2013) observes that genetic modification has increased corn, cotton, and soy production by between 20% and 30%; this has reduced their prices and increased their accessibility. GM foods are generally cheaper to produce and more nutritious than their organic counterparts (Chrispeels, 1998) thus suits the purpose of countering food insecurity. Furthermore, some GM crops are known to require less pesticide, less plowing effectively countering soil erosion (Greenpeace, 2011). GM foods are carefully prepared and extensively tested for safety, cheaper to produce, more nutritious, and assist in environmental conservation.

From these, I conclude that GM foods are safe.
