The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses has made significant contributions to advance the nursing profession and improve healthcare quality. It provides nurses open guidance about how they could provide optimal care to patients who are in a critical state. Nurses are encouraged to become inspirations to those patients who happen to be in the most pain. AACN is a community that motivates nurses to evolve with time and continually meet the ever-dynamic demands of nursing (AACN, 2015). The healthy Work Environment initiative taken by AACN is a worth-mentioning contribution that has served to improve the quality of both the physical environment and patient safety.

Palliative and end-of-life care is another major initiative taken by AACN to empower the dead and survivors. Professional associations help to influence nursing practice on a whole new level compared to nursing unions. This is because these associations have better financial and academic resources to qualify nurses. Better resources help the nursing practice to flourish at a much faster pace. Better educational materials are provided to nurses which help them in improving their credentials. Unions cannot promote quality nursing care like professional associations can because unionizations do not let a nurse think and speak independently.

Unionization erodes professional freedom and status (Shields, 2000).
