Even people who proclaim abstinence have at least had one drink in their lifetime and would do so again should the occasion call for it. Addiction to alcohol or alcoholism is also an acknowledged psychological ailment termed as disabling addictive disorder. Addiction in itself is not the issue, in my opinion. However, the behavior resulting from consuming prodigious quantities of alcohol, usually above an individual’s tolerance threshold is what causes problems. Alcohol consumption is one of the main causes of cancer. Moreover, there is the problem of drunk driving. In every state, country, and nation there are laws that prohibit driving while drunk. It is considered a serious offence all around the world and rightly so. When under the influence of alcohol, an individual does not only risk his own life but places other people at risk of injury or death.

I believe that a very large percentage of people who drink more than once a month have committed this offence knowingly. In the United States alone, drunk driving deaths accounted for 32% of the total number of car accident deaths in 2008. In numbers, that is 11,773 people dead (Drunk Driving Statistics). The fact that innocent people died due to other people’s carelessness is highly disturbing. If you have been drinking, you should not be driving; it is as simple as that. One should learn to control oneself in a responsible manner by calling a taxi or designating someone responsible as the driver.

Carelessness and irresponsibility cost lives. Imagine not being able to slam the brakes on time due to being inebriated and running someone coming out of your own house over. Who can that person be?
