A Raisin in the Sun In his previous critique of Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, Amiri Baraka argues that he and others find the play as focused on the middle class while overlooking plights of most of African American struggling to make ends meet. I do not agree with his argument. The Youngers represents a group of blacks who stand firm to fight against discrimination and segregation. They refuse the Clybourne Park Improvement Association money in return of staying away. Mr. Lindner tries to convince them to accept the offer, but Walter tells him “…We dont want your money” (Hansberry 575).

The paly, therefore, represent a transforming family. The Youngers family is moving out of the ghetto to residents, which were meant for the whites. They are the embodiment of social change and ready to reject all portray of racism. Beneatha rejects George Murchison whom she thinks is “shallow” (Hansberry 505) unconscious to racial problems.I agree with the Baraka’s revised position, which argues that the play demonstrates actual lives of African American. He argues that it is only a racist or people who submit to racism can only conceive terms such as “white folks’ neighborhood”.

Hansberry’s play depicts a family that is fighting racial segregations and discrimination. The Youngers is ready to move to the social status meant for the whites and oppose all the efforts of the white community from pushing them backwards. The family struggles to make the dream of their parents come true (WestportPlayhouse). They are radical African Americans who do not restrict themselves from interacting with other races since they are as complicated as the other races. “White folks’ neighborhood” is a notion that exists in the mind of the racists.

It is a term that segregates African Americans from the white people instead of integrating them as people with similar abilities (WestportPlayhouse). The Youngers have proved to other black people that there is no such term to people who are willing to fight discrimination and segregation based on race.
