M6: Progress in Implementing the Dental Health Promotion Program for Rural School Children The second round of dental screening was conducted at the three participating schools (assuming that one year has passed since implementation of this program). DMFT scores for participating students were collected and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 11. This was compared with the baseline DMFT scores which were collected a year before to determine if there are any changes in the rate of dental caries over a period of one year. Statistical analysis of the data reveals that the mean DMFT score has decreased slightly from 2.13 to 2.01 with a standard deviation of 1.40. Improvements in DMFT scores were seen within each school: School A: DMFT score decreased from 1.75 to 1.72 School B: DMFT score decreased from 2.69 to 2.50 School C: DMFT score decreased from 1.95 to 1.83 School B therefore showed the highest improvement followed by School C. School A had the least improvement in DMFT scores. Successes and Hurdles: Dental screening was conducted successfully at all three participating schools however, the overall participation rate of students reduced to 90%. Goals for the Week: The goal for the week is to conduct the second round of dental health education at participating schools. The data will then be compared to the baseline data which was collected a year ago to determine if there are any changes in the oral hygiene knowledge, attitude and practice of students. M7: Progress in Implementing the Dental Health Promotion Program for Rural School Children The second round of oral health education was conducted at the three participating schools (assuming that one year has passed since implementation of this program). The data on children’s knowledge, attitude and practice about oral hygiene was collected using a questionnaire that used a 5-point Likert scale to measure the extent to which each participant agreed or disagreed with various aspects of oral health. Analysis of this data revealed that 30% of the children believed that maintaining good oral health was not in their control. This was a dramatic improvement from the baseline data collected a year ago when about 76% of children believed that that maintaining good oral health was not in their control. Again, 20% of the children did not have positive attitude towards the importance of a dentist’s role in maintaining their dental health. Considering that a year ago, nearly 50% of the children did not have positive attitude towards the importance of a dentist’s role in maintaining their dental health, this is a dramatic improvement. Again, number of children familiar with dental floss increased from 11% to 70%. Data also revealed that the number of children brushing their teeth twice a day increased from 26% to 60%. Success: There was dramatic improvement in the knowledge, attitude and practice about oral hygiene among participating students revealing that the school based oral health education program has been very effective. Goals for the Week: Conduct the third round of dental screening at the three participating schools (assuming that two year has passed since implementation of this program).? M8: Progress in Implementing the Dental Health Promotion Program for Rural School Children The third round of dental screening was conducted at the three participating schools (assuming that two years have passed since implementation of this program). DMFT scores for participating students were collected and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 11. Improvements in DMFT scores were seen within each school with School B showing the highest improvement: School A: DMFT score decreased from 1.75 to 1.63 in two years of the implementation. School B: DMFT score decreased from 2.69 to 1.99 in two years of the implementation. School C: DMFT score decreased from 1.95 to 1.69 in two years of the implementation. School B therefore showed the highest improvement followed by School C. School A had the least improvement in DMFT scores.
