The Most Compelling Problem Facing Youth In The Twenty-First Century - Essay Example

As we proceed towards the 21st century, faced with major challenges of political uncertainty we expect our youth who are the future world citizens to play a significant part in the search for new principles that would enable stability in this world. Youth portray their ability and willingness to be part of their societies. Specific conditions, such as globalization, information, communication technology, and immigration can be accentuated as forces that would affect the youth.

The present picture of the world is characterized by distressing economic, social, and human costs. Addressing such challenges and adopting various strategies with a positive attitude would perhaps provide a sustainable future for the present youth. However, some of the other issues that our youth face are global warming- The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, launched a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change and this problem had to be dealt with. The IPCC states that climate change is “unequivocal” and may bring “abrupt and irreversible” impacts.

“Today the world scientist has spoken clearly and with one voice,” Mr.Ban said. (Black, 2007) Africa facing additional droughts- Due to global warming places such as Africa can be the worst hit as drought adds to the problems of water shortage this adding conflict over the cross-border rivers. Scientist is worried that this global warming could affect the rainfall patterns across the continent. Terrorism- This has been an agenda for decades. The Security Council has also been active in countering terrorism through resolutions and by establishing several subsidiary bodies.

At the same time, a number of programs, offices, and agencies of the United Nations system have been engaged in specific operational actions against terrorism further assisting the Member States in their efforts. The strategy forms a basis for a concrete plan of action: to address the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism; to prevent and combat terrorism; to take measures to build state capacity to fight terrorism; to strengthen the role of the United Nations in combating terrorism, and to ensure the respect of human rights while countering terrorism.
