However, this rate of improvement indicates that it will take women 45 more years to eradicate the wage gap. Men and women should help remove the gender wage gap by negotiating for better salaries by self-empowerment, self-monitoring, and legislative awareness and advocacy. Second, men and women should boost self-monitoring skills. O’Neill and O’Reilly (2011) showed in their study that self-monitoring, or the ability to properly evaluate and respond to social situations, can improve promotions for women.

If men and women can apply self-monitoring skills, they develop their chances of getting better salaries. Finally, they should support laws that make pay transparent and fair, so that gender wage gaps can be decreased. An example is being aware of the provisions of the Lily Ledbetter Act and how it can help employers become more aware of reducing wage gaps. Another example is supporting the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that would oblige employers to prove that pay differences do not have gender components (Kurtzleben, 2010).

The act will also protect workers who talk about their salaries with one other (Kurtzleben, 2010). All these actions will help women and men become active negotiators of their salaries because they will improve legislative support while enhancing monitoring and financial management skills.
