The nursing profession is sometimes faced with difficulties of different forms. One of the key issues facing the nurses is risks in the workplace, manifested in the form of physical and verbal aggression. Physical aggression is mostly experienced in nursing homes and emergency. The nurses working in areas connected with psychiatric or emergency services are at a higher risk for the violence. Verbal aggression, on the other hand, is normally experienced by general nurses. The effect of this aggression is a negative psychological impact (Edward, Ousey, Warelow & Lui, 2014).
The work violence has a significant impact on the workers’ health as well as their productivity. Both physical and non-physical violence amongst the nurses is associated with a reduced satisfaction on the job, much occupational strain, and a reduced outcome in the patient care. The nurses are at the highest risk of aggression especially when they are overtired, distressed, and dissatisfied with their work. If the work organization is improved, then the negative effects of the violence can be reduced (Magnavita, 2014).
As a nurse, the issue of aggression has lowered my self-esteem. It is a humiliating experience to see my patients spit on me, hit me, scratch and kick me especially when I am administering direct care. I have, however, learned that most of such patients do so under the influence of alcohol.
Currently, there are some measures instituted to prevent the violence in hospitals. This includes the presence of security officers to handle the violence. There is also video monitoring within the hospitals though not sufficient (Privitera, 2011).
Work-Related violence is a serious problem in hospitals since it results in low job morale. Poorly motivated health workers cannot deliver well. A solution, therefore, has to be found to end the violence.
The recommendations to curb the situation would be to enhance the presence of many security officers. The staff should also identify the security measures taken by similar healthcare centers and integrate them in their hospitals.
