 THE ROLE AND PURPOSE OF COMMUNICATION Communication serves a key role in daily relations. It has an impact on life activities of every level, from basic day to day activities to business, academic, organisational structures, etc. The list is endless. A key survival tool in the human race is all derived from communication as a root base. The life of organizations depends on a solid effective communication to be productive and healthy. It is about information sharing, addressing and solving problem and dealing with potential problems. Our lives need interaction for sharing and exchanging views, solving problems, friendship, security, comfort and love. This study investigates the diverse communication forms in diverse settings Communication can take various forms affecting motivation. Proper communication results in job satisfaction, commitment and increased trust. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Communication requires skill; if it is expressed poorly it can lead to chaos, dysfunction and inefficiency. Effective communication comprises of relaying information between people that eventually leads towards outcomes that are desired, provided that the intended meaning does not get changed or distorted on path. Effectively relaying messages is inclusive of: (a) Non Verbal Communication, (b) Controlling motional levels as well as coping with and balancing stress. (c) Attentive Listening (a) Nonverbal communication Non verbal communication comprises of effective body language in expressing the meaning that is desired. This is inclusive of hand and leg movements as well as facial expressions and eye contact. It includes body posture and the tone of voice. (b) Controlling emotional levels has an impact on nonverbal communication. Controlling emotion creates understanding amongst entities present. Effective communication requires emotional control. It is a skill that minimizes misunderstandings. Managing stress is a key tool to control behaviour and emotions. (c) Attentive listening includes understanding messages and meaning implied leading to effective understanding between the parties and clarity of shared information. This will evolve in healthy and safe communication environments. Effective communication serves an integral role in management. Communication paths have to flow smoothly and unhindered for tasks to be carried out efficiently. Effective communication is dependent on attitudes and behaviour and therefore relies on a multitude of skills that usually have to be applied in daily situations, in order to reach desired outcomes. Effective communication is the foundation for work that needs to be executed inclusive of strategies, propositions, changes etc. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE It is crucial to develop skills of emotional intelligence in order to negotiate, empathize and overall, understand other people. Our global economy is one aspect that requires this particular skill to venture into successful careers and lives. Emotional intelligence is present on all levels of human interaction. In a business perspective: from motivation of the staff to actual customer service, from brainstorming concepts to company presentations. Emotional intelligence involves manner of assessing people send is key to the development of relationships. Emotional intelligence encapsulates power struggles, change resistance, competitions, judgment, leadership, vision and success and may other aspects. When a team is emotionally intelligent, it enables them to work in unison with maximum effectiveness towards desired goals and will in term, increase overall success. (Cherniss, C. (2001). There are basically five main EQ (emotional Intelligence) categories These are A) Self Awareness. B) Self Regulation c) Motivation D) Empathy e) Social Skills a) Self-awareness Self-awareness is getting in tune with inner feelings, recognising personal emotions and the effects and evaluating them in order to manage them with self-confidence (affirm and acknowledge self-worth and capabilities) b) Self-regulation When one is in the midst of experiencing emotions it is not an easy task to control them. Reducing how long it will last is possible by alleviating depression, anxiety or anger. The techniques to do this include keeping in line with positivity, prayer, meditation or taking a break .Methods of self regulation require self-control. Self control is firstly not reacting with disruptive impulses. It is crucial to maintain trustworthiness through integrity and honesty. Adaptability is an important trait, by being flexible to change and taking responsibility for personal performance. Most importantly is innovation, welcoming new ideas. c) Motivation: Self motivation requires positive attitude and goals that are clear. It is possible to practice positivity by reframing negativity in a positive manner. Striving to improve continuously and committing to the group or organization involved. Take the initiative to follow opportunities and pursue goals relentlessly despite obstacles D) Empathy: Recognising others feelings is crucial for a step towards success Empathy plays a key role in service orientation to meet the needs of clients and developing and recognising abilities and progress in others. It is a key factor in cultivating opportunities and understanding the needs of others. e) Social skills: Interpersonal skills for career and life success are crucial in the globally connected world of today where almost everyone can access technical knowledge. Useful skills in this range are influence through tactics of persuasion, communicating with clear messages, inspiring people and groups, initiating change ,managing conflict through understanding and negotiating ,building relationships that are instrumental and creating teams with collective goals. Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) Neuro Linguistic Programming involves the most influential aspects of the human experience. These are N: Neurology, L: Language and P: Programming. Neurological systems regulate bodily function, language determines our communication interaction with others and programming determines our world perception .NLP describes the mind (neuro) and Language (linguistic) interplay affects our bodies and behaviour (programming)( Dilts, DeLozier and Bacon Dilts), NLP 11: The Next Generation: Enriching Study of Subjective experience) The Neuro linguistic Programming (NLP) approach is constructively dealing with people to achieve the final desired outcome. Typical workplace and other gatherings are usually inclusive of a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds and world perspectives. NLP aims to bridge division by examining the manner of communication and thought patterns that are developed. Communication determines success. Messages that are relayed to recipients must be clearly understood. NLP basically involves ‘modelling’ recognising excellence and finding out how excellence is achieved and replicating results ,– NLP outlines a structure to learn in that manner. Critique and opinion on NLP and emotional intelligence NLP works in providing challenging and excellent ways of creating world perception in influencing interacting and opening minds. The concept of reality refers to perceptions and is deciphered by experiences though sensory systems .We all have personal maps of "reality" NLP is a method to enrich choices. MY JOURNEY TOWARDS SELF DISCOVERY (Excellence is rooted from having many choices. Wisdom from multiple perspectives) My current life setting primarily is in the academic world. My personal goals and ambitions exclusively set within in this sector. During the task of completing a self reflective journal, I realised that the human experience reaches beyond the individual point, to family, community and global systems. My academic projects involve theory and practical. Practical aspects are invoked by direct activity in community activities. Conflict arises from creating the balance, having to outsource my energy to the society, family and the world in motion. Lagging behind in the pathway, I realised that to keep within the pace required interaction. I questioned myself “What was the key tool?” The answer: communication. I needed to address my communication level. The two techniques was active listening and building awareness of personalities that I had to deal with. Effectively using emotional intelligence to “bridge the gap” Bridging the gap meant "looking into the mirror”. The knowledge gained in my academic world became key tools to resolve my state of disarray and create balance. I practiced becoming self aware of my emotions. I had to begin coming to terms with my feelings of guilt because firstly I did not make it to an important family gathering. Secondly I made commitments that were unattainable to community group dealings. The entire journey comprised of listening to the disconsolate tone from voices of relatives and community members and dealing with the non verbal reactions. It was not my first non appearance or self exclusion from social gatherings. Once aware of my over alluding guilt, I gradually self regulated by listening to some new positive music lyrics. Then I was ready to call, listen and apologise, have empathy with them about my non attendance to a function of priority. I was open to new ideas of making more time available. I set aside time to communicate more effectively with self confidence on my academic achievement, but was open to all perspectives. I clearly relayed messages regarding my time management setbacks. My key weaknesses were about not relaying messages effectively. I did not make my time commitments clear and opt for viable solutions. I strived toward understanding and respecting the world model of individuals out of my academic structure. With clearly listening and expressing my messages we came to a formidable agreement on reaching meeting targets building an assertive rapport and gaining confidence with self esteem. I concluded to approach the conflict within the SMART approach. My weaknesses were not clearly organising goals and aims to gain confidence and self esteem lacking in my approach to conclusive problem solving. S: Specific To organise all my activities to make at time for social interaction with friends and relatives. M: Measurable Schedule all academic programmes to facilitate time management. Develop a daily journal with a task list for each day. A: Attainable With effective communication and time management these goals of re addressing my priority lists were attainable and (R) realistic T: Time bound Organising and structuring task for each day in advance, I made a clear structure of setting aside time to balance my academic life and prioritising practical. I used all knowledge gained in a self-discovery pathway, towards vision and wisdom with interpersonal skills, levelled with emotional intelligence and include powerful language patterns. The journey encountered afforded me a level of interpersonal skills that were balanced with emotional intelligence and included assertive language patterns.
