Factors such as technology, legal, and finances are critical. Nurses have the first-hand experience in healthcare services, thus, they are the irreplaceable candidates who can point out what is necessary and effective (Virginia Nurses Today, 2010). The consequence of excluding nurses during this phase is that it may result in the establishment of an ineffective HIT. This phase examines the workflows, determining how the new HIT will improve healthcare services (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015).

Nurses are the direct people who manage the patients’ care, serving as a direct link between the patients and the entirety of the medical personnel. Thus, nurses have a better understanding of the duty, responsibility, and workflow of every individual (Page, 2011). The ramification of not involving nurses during this stage would be the creation of a system that does not take into account the care and safety of the patient since its workflow is impaired. The stage involves the determination of the appropriate system architecture and operations (Hsiao, Chang & Chen 2011).

Nurses are at the core of the workflows in healthcare; thus they are the best candidates to indicate what is most appropriate about the system design. Excluding nurses in this phase limits the designer’s ability to develop a system with relevant user needs, and thus creating a barrier to interactions between the system and its environment. This will, in turn, pose unanticipated consequences that might endanger the safety of patients. This stage comprises such activities as system customizing, testing, and installing.

Nurses have an in-depth and unique mastery of the complexities of healthcare for instance communication patterns and the regulatory and ethical requirement. (Hsiao, Chang & Chen 2011). Avoiding nurses during system implementation might result in a chaotic HIT system which might wreck the healthcare services and thus jeopardizing the patients. On the other hand, seeking to collaborate with the nurses together with the other stakeholders will mitigate such ramifications. The dynamic nature of duties, interactions, and technological advancement demands that the organization adopts its requirements into the system design regularly (Boswell, 2011).

Nurses coordinate patients and the rest of the stakeholders, thus, spending most of the time interacting with the system. This makes them the best candidates to notice critical system failures. During this phase, therefore, excluding them will pose possible system errors, easily unnoticeable by the other stakeholders and this will result in poor healthcare services thus poor patient care. After system redesign in my organization, I noticed that the patient data information system had an electronic glitch that impaired its operations in a way that data updates took more than twenty-four hours.

This resulted in major problems in regard to patient treatment reports and progress, consequently conflicting the workflows. Despite being expensive and time-consuming to amend this problem, it was rewarding eventually as it restored both the patient's and health practitioner’s confidence in the integrity of information in our data system.
