Sex and Gender Differences in Personal Relationship – Essay Example
The paper "Sex and Gender Differences in Personal Relationship" is an outstanding example of an essay on social science. In precedent, men and women possessed different responsibilities in their relationships. However, in 21stcentury gender has lost most of its influences towards the roles that the sexes play within the domestic environments. Therefore, this means considerable alterations have occurred within the domestic environment over the preceding few decades leading to changes in the roles that each gender performs. This transpires in the wake when women have been progressively fighting to enhance their status in relation to equality. Therefore, the fight towards parity has brought immense influence on the tasks assigned to women and men within the domestic environment. Although the roles have substantially changed within the domestic environment little, it has occurred to some extent thus indicating that gender still has some influence on the way tasks are assigned.
In general, the roles had noticeably changed relative to earlier centuries when women used to carry out numerous tasks within and outside the domestic environment. In the earlier centuries, women were awarded tough roles towards the family mostly their spouses with little to say concerning the actions of their spouses. However, these have changed, and today women can contribute to the affairs of the family through equality that has transpired throughout the globe. All through the period prior to the twentieth century, women had the roles of taking care of their young and carrying out activities such as tending to animals and the farm while men had all they say concerning the utilization of resources obtained through activities that were undertaken by women (Hechavarria, 2005, 1). In recent times, these have changed, and the affairs within the domestic environment are undertaken collectively by both genders indicating transformation in this area. The transformations have transpired, not just because of equality, but also because of the changing perception of men towards the female gender (Ramos 2011, 1).
Gender is deliberated a societal construction that creates a vivid distinction that occurs as individuals grow thus creating the perceived male and female gender. This is presented through a character in the way gender roles are awarded in the domestic environment. This leads to people acquiring different roles in the social context as created by offering different roles to different sexes. In most cases, gender roles are seen as social constructs although certain roles are awarded depending on biological attributes as presented per gender (Wax 2010, 1). Therefore, some roles in the domestic environment cannot be altered or changed simply because they are awarded depending on the biological characteristic that a certain gender depicts.
In today’s family, roles are not defined for certain gender thus contributing to the success of most families. Education concerning gender equalities has markedly improved the perception of most people thus contributing to the collective undertaking of tasks around the household. Tasks are conducted, with respect to abilities and availability, to undertake the requisite tasks. Therefore, the tasks cannot be separated consistent with gender since time and skill are the main determinants of persons to do what (Wax 2010, 1). The actuality that certain men are unhandy and certain women are non-domestic has immensely contributed to changes in roles within the household. This has allowed individuals to undertake activities according to their preferences and not with respect to the task that has been assigned with respect to their genders.
Consequently, the factor of feminism and masculinity has vanished in the 21st century with the changes that have transpired making persons from different genders undertake different roles. People have altered their attitudes towards roles as viewed in the traditional systems, and fathers have realized that they can undertake in certain tasks such as parenting instead of just concentrating on making a livelihood for the remaining component of the family (Wax 2010, 1). The stigma presented to persons carrying out roles that were supposed to be carried out with regard to gender has over the eons, diminished thus present a favorable environment for both genders, to involve in what they prefer doing despite its allocation to a certain gender.
Some of these roles such as the view of women as the caretaker cannot be changed simply because they possess this attribute in their capacity to reproduce and take care of their children (Canary, Faulkner & Emmers-Sommer 1997, 116). Similarly, men are considered to have the physical strength thus their roles concerning various actions that they take such as providing and safeguarding their families cannot be easily altered. It is evident throughout the globe that men undertake activities that require extensive physical strength than women while women undertake activities that necessitate accurate mental abilities (Wax 2010, 1).
In the 21st century, roles are no longer awarded on a gender basis contrary to the traditional or conventional ways that transpired in the olden days. The roles have substantially changed with the modernization of existence and education concerning equality and autonomy to undertake various roles without stigma from the rest of the populace. Most roles have changed although certain roles remain designated to certain sexual characteristics. This can be accredited to various genetic or biological factors that deem a certain gender fit to carry out certain activities than others. Therefore, it has become apparent that gender still plays a small part in the allocation of certain tasks within the domestic environment.
