Obamas Foreign Policy - Essay Example

The paper "Obama’s Foreign Policy" is a good example of an essay on politics. Addressing the vexed issues of Palestine, Iraq, Al Qaeda and terrorism, nuclear weapons and Iran, fundamentalism and the Muslim community, together in one speech may not be justified taking into account the enormity of the subject. Thus, President Obama relies more on rhetoric and less on substance. His speech is, with a few exceptions, merely a repetition of the US stance on the problems concerning Middle-east and West Asia.

There is hardly any evidence to suggest a new international path-breaking initiative. By terming the US ties with Israel as ‘unbreakable’ he is only toeing a line adopted by his predecessors. He fails to set-up up a time frame for the formation of Palestine state—a vexed issue in the global polity. Though he is committal about recalling troops from Iraq, his objectives in Afghanistan are confusing and vague. On the other hand, Obama successfully dismantles the civilizational clash theory propounded by the ‘Jihadi elements’ to whip up the hate campaign against the US.

Obama’s admission of mistakes in the American foreign policy is clearly historic. By highlighting the achievements of the American Muslims and referring to his own Muslim ancestry, Obama tries to assuage the feelings of American Muslims who have, often, borne the brunt of hate campaigns ever since 9/11 World Trade Center bombings. Inspired by spiritual wisdom, Obama suggests harmony, peace, goodwill, and non-violence as the only way out from the present predicaments dogging the Muslim world.

The speech is a landmark by many standards and can usher in a new era of reconciliation between the Muslim world and the United States.
