However, the notion that figural pieces that Moslems used in the art are Islamic Art is not true. The Islamic religion still forbids the representation of figures and to call any art that contains figural representations that are Islamic is erroneous and offensive to Moslems. Islamic Art also contributed to different artistic fields: architecture which entails the designs of the pointed arch, the brick dome, and brick vaulted arcades; interiors and exteriors of buildings that are decorated with off-set brick, stucco, black (striping), or tile; and the use of scripts in designs on silk, metalwork, carpets, ceramics, textiles, pottery, stone, glass, wood and even scripted on secular manuscripts and palaces.

Calligraphy has struck me most in all Islamic Art. Though it is the noblest form of art because it is associated with the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an, its Arabic beautiful writing is included in all kinds of arts (“Islamic Art Collection”). Another characteristic of Islamic Art is the use of a formal balance. An Islamic artist makes use of repetitive elements in order to achieve symmetry. Because of the absence of figural imagery, Islamic designs are created with rather humble aspirations but of a high degree.

This is their way to enrich an environment or to beautify an object and they seek to enhance rather than to dominate. Islamic artists do not want to reveal their own personality or create art that tells a story of its own. For them, Allah is the personality of their art and Qua’rn is the story. Although Islamic art is highly dynamic art marked by regional characteristics as well as significant influences from other cultures, it maintains the remarkable coherence of its vast geographic and temporal boundaries, portraying Moslem’s own unique artistic language.

I chose the article, “Islamic Calligraphy” by Saim because it talks about calligraphy mostly, especially its use as an Islamic gift. I have discovered through this article that Islamic calligraphy is the best gift for any special occasion for Moslems. To be given by Islamic Calligraphy is an honor. With the help of this article, I have also learned to appreciate Islamic artists more of their talent and abilities in making this kind of artwork. Through this art too, I have witnessed their dedication and love for their God and religion.
