It is a 25 to 30 minutes program or reading activity and it is implemented three to four times a weak. Its purpose is to help the existing programs. There is a module presented by the Iris Centre. This module presents the strategy for peer tutoring and defines the benefits of its implementation on the students of Kindergarten. In this strategy, students work in pairs and this strategy strengthen their reading skills. This module includes step by step activities for the learning process.
There are many benefits of PALS for students and teachers. These are as follows:
PALS is effective in a learning institute, especially where there is a diversity of students. It includes students with learning disabilities, low performing students without learning disabilities, average and high achieving readers and English learners. Teachers are pleased when they see that PALS has the ability to define instructions separately according to the student’s needs. Before PALS the teachers find it difficult to provide each student with different instructions.
Students who were taught according to the strategy of PALS performed better than the students who do not apply PALS. They give good results in phonological awareness, decoding, and word recognition.
The strategy of PALS is easy to apply and is cheap. The teachers who found hard to teach students with more than one language now due to PALS they are surprised and happy.
It produces good reading results, stimulates student’s participation in group participation and provides better opportunities to read.
One of the remarkable benefits of PALS is students learn from each other. One becomes coach and other becomes a student. In this activity, they learn much more letters and sounds.
After a comparison of reading skills between K-PALS and first-grade PALS it came to know that:
The reading skills for Kindergarten students (K-PALS) in PALS are very advanced than the level set. But students easily meet this level. And the PALS for first-grade students is very structured. The lessons are in sequence and skills are learned one by one.
The students of K-PALS learn decoding and word recognition. They develop reading skills. While students of First grade develop learning skills like decode and comprehend. They learn to read more fluently. They perform better at reading tests.
The K-PALS students learn during the session of 20 to 30 minutes three times a week. K-PALS include two types of activities, sound play, and sounds and words. The session for First-Grade PALS is 40 minutes three times a week. Two activities are used i.e. sounds and words and partner reading.
The differences in the recommended methods of grouping for K-PALS and First-Grade PALS are as under:
In both the groups, the teacher group pair students like one are low performing and the other is high performing student. But still, there are differences in the grouping method of both grades. In K-PALS, the teacher pairs the highest performing student with the lowest-performing student. The teacher then makes the pair of next highest performing student with the next lowest performing student. This continues till pairs completed. And in First-Grade PALS, the teacher divides the rank-ordered list into two halves and then make a pair of top high performing student with top low performing student.
If, I am a teacher of Kindergarten and implement PALS in my class. One day in my class of 20 students if one is absent then this will make the situation difficult for me because there will be no partner for one of the students. Whatever the situation will be I will be consistent in applying PALS in my class. The student who is left alone will be partnered by any student in the class once that student performed his activity. In this case, there will be no loss of that student.
As a teacher of First-grade and I am going to implement PALS for the first time. The two steps that I will take for a healthy team environment will be:
1. For a team making the first crucial step is making pairs of students for activity performance. Without pair making the application of PALS is difficult.
2. The second step in implementing PALS is the preparation of materials. But the good thing is that material is already in the manuals of PALS.
