Whitney, the eldest sister of Michael Phelps, tried out for the Olympic team at the age of 15. Her career was abrupt due to injuries. Hilary, on the other hand, despite showing expertise especially in the use of butterfly stroke, did not pursue this endeavor. At the age of 7, it was documented that Michael initially showed signs of apprehension in putting his head underwater, prompting his instructors to advise using back float. This honed Michael’s skill in the backstroke. (Michael Phelps Biography 1) Michael officially started training for this career at the Loyola High School pool.

His dream to become a champion was inspired by Tom Dolan and Tom Malchow who both competed in the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. His first swimming coach was Bob Bowman who saw his potential and trained him at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club at the Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center. At the age of 14, Michael already qualified for the U.S. National B Team. (Michael Phelps Biography 1)
