The set of unique characteristics which people living in a particular region adopted turned into their marked identities and was seen externally in the way in which they dressed their traditions, their concept of social organizations and the way in which they interacted with the environment. On the whole preserving cultural diversity is very important for the future of mankind and all attempts to conserve the indigenous cultures are as important as the conservation of species and ecosystems is to live in general. Therefore it is very important to maintain cultural diversity because this process will strengthen, maintain and promote the human society. When people of different cultures interact and yet respect each other boundaries, it gives people the opportunities to enrich their minds and gain more knowledge. Human society should not be patterned along with the dictates of the commercial market as these forces cannot determine human values and traditions to be followed in society. In the course of preserving cultural diversity, the recognition and preservation of the cultures of indigenous peoples and traditional cultures require special attention.

How do we measure cultural diversity? This is a rather difficult thing to do; one good indication of cultural diversity is number of languages spoken in a region or in the world as a whole. Today, unfortunately, there is a decline in cultural diversity. David Crystal (Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor) conducted research in which he found that only 10% of the languages currently spoken in the world will still be spoken  100 years time from now.

Survival International and UNESCO are two organizations that have clubbed hands to protect threatened societies and cultures. So what does all this have to the hospitality industry and how can the hospitality industry contribute to the maintenance of culture? The purpose of introducing the concept of cultural diversity is to bring out the importance of maintaining cultural diversity and also to understand how cultural diversity stands in today’s world.

Hospitality Industry
The hospitality industry consists of industries such as hotels, restaurants, holiday resorts and travel agency services and their chief activity is providing service to people.

The hospitality industry is a customer-oriented industry, in which the chief emphasis is providing quality service in order to get a loyal clientele.
