That psychological transformation also served as a catalyst for the metamorphosis of his family. So it's not just the son who changed here, but, like a domino effect, also the family.             As the family has experienced financial difficulties because of the collapse of their business, Gregor took it upon himself to support his family and gradually pay off their debts, while all of the members of the family lived idly and comfortably.

"In those days, Gregor's sole concern had been to do everything in his power to make the family forget as quickly as possible the business disaster which had plunged everyone into a state of total despair" (Kafka 26). He did not pursue his own ambitions. He has been happy being able to help his family. And why not? It is but human nature to feel the need to help our family whenever we can, and being able to do so gives us a kind of satisfaction. But after a while, his efforts are unappreciated as the family takes his generosity as something normal.

And that's another vexing human flaw, when we see that something is already expected, we see less of it, we become used to it, and oversees the sacrifices made behind it. So there he was, living for his family and not for himself, but unappreciated. But as soon as they found out they can financially support their way of living, Gregor loses his importance in the family. Gregor eventually dies and as a reaction to that, his dad said: “We can thank God for that!”  (Kafka 577).

Cruel isn't it?
