Childhood Obesity Epidemic – Essay Example
The paper "Childhood Obesity Epidemic " is an outstanding example of an essay on social science. Two of the main reasons why childhood obesity is becoming prevalent are because of an increase in calorie consumption and a lack of physical activity. American children are consuming more calories each day than children did 30 to 40 years ago. Added fats are the main problem in this because it increases the body mass of a child. Foods such as bagels and cheeseburger have doubled in size over the last 20 years. This sharp increase in food consumption has resulted in a generation that is used to large serving portions. Children are at a stage where they need to eat lots of food to help them grow, but they mainly need healthy food so that they don’t become obese. The other reason why childhood obesity is on the rise is due to little physical activity. Kids from 30 to 40 years ago did not have the same electronic entertainment on offer to them as children have nowadays. This has resulted in kids gaining more enjoyment from watching television or playing video games. The body needs regular exercise in order to stay healthy, and sitting around all day does nothing to prevent obesity. I myself like to watch all of my favorite TV shows each week and I have many of them. This means that I spend a lot of time sitting on the couch while stationary. Because I have only limited time, I do not have enough time to go outside and get some exercise in on a regular basis. In terms of my own family, I can demonstrate to my younger siblings about the importance of good health by eating more balanced meals. At school, I can cut down on the number of fizzy drinks that I buy. Finally, for my community, I can join a sports team and encourage some of my peers to become involved.
