The steel frame gives the building strength. It makes the high-rise building possible and safer. The steel is problematic in heated conditions. It transmits heat quickly. The steel will bend and collapse with the heat. It is important to protect the steel from the possibility of flames. The steel is covered with concrete. Firefighter also responds to other disasters. An example is that of earthquakes. The steel helps support the building in such a disaster. This improves survivability for the occupants and the rescuers, the firefighters.

The concrete has steel bars plates or rods added. This makes the material able to stand the stress and not be brittle. The use makes it possible to improve building functionality. The strengths of the two materials are brought together. This composite material has a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to steel. There is a bonding of the steel with the concrete. The building walls are stronger and cooler in a fire.
