Aviation Maintenance Organization Aviation Maintenance Organization Work in a commercial aviation maintenance firm usually involves a distributed system, where different people with different skills, knowledge and capabilities may need to work together as a team. Employees in aviation maintenance organization perform specific duties that require intensive training. While employees’ skills and competence are vital for these organizations, improving quality and accomplishing safety depends on employees’ development of effective, cooperative working relationships and interpersonal skills with the other employees’ in the working teams. This requires dynamic interactions and team coordination during work, so as to improve the effectiveness of timing and process of interdependent actions. Aviation maintenance managers perform management duties that focus on quality improvement, increasing sales, cutting cost, improving efficiency, safety, and complying with regulations. Other duties include hiring new employees and meeting security regulations that ensure that employees work in a safe environment.
Effective team coordination is a necessity for job satisfaction, safety and efficiency. This is primarily significant in safety critical organizations such as aviation maintenance firms (Salas et al. 2001). Teamwork enhances both efficiency and safety by identifying and managing individual errors by using the organization’s available resources. Gittell, Civil Aviation Authority, argued that sharing goals and knowledge, showing respect among the employees, and frequent and timely problem solving improve the efficiency and quality of work (Salas et al. 2001). Coordination in teamwork is also improved by effective communication amongst the employees. Other studies have established that communication is a parallel process for teams, however, in aviation maintenance firm, communication is considered as a critical medium of coordination. This is because communication is an interactive process of generating and interpreting information (Salas et al. 2001). Effective communication is crucial in aviation maintenance firm because most of the works are performed in groups comprising of individuals with different skills, therefore; they need to control processes in coordinated ways. In addition, most of the processes in these organizations are loosely coupled, and this means that effective communication among employees in required.
It is essential to note that aircraft maintenance procedures and processes are standardized by company procedures and regulations, however, inevitable conflicts and miscommunication usually occur, and this weakens efficiency and quality of maintenance work (Castro & Lewis, 2011). A study that was done on risk management indicated that lack of coordination and miscommunication are among the key factors that lead to human error in aircraft maintenance. Lack of effective communication, assertiveness, and teamwork are among the key factors that are in the list of maintenance errors and incidents (Salas et al. 2001). According to Federal Aviation Administration, a well coordinated teamwork should have the following characteristics: relaxed interaction, listening, comfortableness with disagreements, clear expectations, clear purpose, participation, openness, shared responsibility and leadership, team maintenance, and good relations with others (Castro & Lewis, 2011). Accidents and incidents that happened in the past can also be used to design effective coordination and communication processes in aviation maintenance organization. Some of the potential causes of coordination problems include working with unfamiliar people, unspoken assumption, fear of asking too many questions, shift handovers, and inadequate miscommunication (Castro & Lewis, 2011).
The current business environment requires aviation maintenance managers to develop strong risk management strategies, which take vendor risk assessments into consideration. Most airline organizations are currently relying on outsourcing programs for aircraft maintenance. They, therefore, usually prefer signing a contract with aviation maintenance firms that are capable of incorporating aspects of strong risk management into their service offering and program management plans (Patankar & Taylor, 2004). Aviation maintenance managers, therefore, should rely and maintain a comprehensive aviation liability policy, which includes aviation product liability coverage and hangar keeper’s coverage. With a comprehensive aviation liability, it is easier for managers to handle risks more efficiently. Aircraft maintenance managers should also ensure that effective and high quality process that ensures that employees’ efficiencies are mobilized with respect to their drug use, criminal history, qualification standards, skills and legal worker status are included in their risk management programs (Patankar & Taylor, 2004). This makes the managers not to worry about worker status, since relevant back-ups are provided for each employee. Proper worker classification is also a necessity in effective risk management. Improper classification of workers usually leads to well documented liability issues that are related to overtime pay, work injury claims and income tax rules (Patankar & Taylor, 2004). Documented liability issues can cause serious financial consequences to aircraft maintenance firms.
In summary, the key function of aircraft maintenance managers is to create a safer working environment that motivates workers. Constant motivation and mobilization of workers is required for efficient and quality service delivery. Teamwork has been established as one of the most effective ways of improving employees’ efficiency and productivity. Through teams, managers have the opportunity to interact personally with every employee in the team. This gives the managers the chance to identify every employee’s capabilities and weaknesses. It will be, therefore, easier for managers to identify the areas to improve on so as to improve employees’ productivity. Effective team work, on the other hand, requires proper communication and coordination. Therefore, managers need to integrate proper communication and coordination processes in their teams. An effective working environment will improve sales, cut operational cost, and enhance efficiency and quality of services offered.
