A more in-depth research on one major/career Introduction Computer Engineering is an area that brings together training in traditional Electrical disciplines with in-depth training in areas of Computer Science (Mansfield 342). The area centers on hardware and system features of processing, and consists of software design and program design in Engineering. Undergraduates learn about computer design, logic design and building, central processing unit, design computerization, computer systems, software manufacturing and electronics. Computer Engineering students get training in Electronics, Hardware-software integration and the students get involved in several aspects of computing like hardware, and software features (Mansfield 343). The students take part in computing designs of microprocessors, computers, and workstations, to design of circuits. This area of Engineering focuses on how systems of computers work, and how they incorporate into the big picture of computers (Mansfield 344). It is through Myer-Briggs, and Strong-Skills tests results that helped me determine my career path as a Computer Engineer. Through the skills, I was in a position to know that Engineers specializing in computers create systems that can present very convenient procedures. These procedures can be discovered in well-developed computers, standard level strategies for items like networking modifications and foci and for making control, and minor level techniques found in vehicles, fax machineries, and microwave cookers. Even mobile phones have high-level procedures that offer useful structures and abilities, and these engineers have allowed this knowledge to be readily accessible (Winston 112). Describe the career path for someone in this career from entry to the highest level in the position: Most training institutions students are usually allowed to select from areas of in-depth training in their lower level and higher level of training because the comprehensive training needed in Computer Engineering for designing and application of systems in computers. Other institutions require their students to get training in overall Engineering programs before taking Computer Engineering as a major area of study (Winston 113). These Engineering learning institutions aim at providing an environment that promotes education through teamwork and uninterrupted process of learning with the intention of developing the learning process. Members of the faculty frequently keep present information through frequent research, industrial appointment, and other academic actions, and use this knowledge to educate their students (Winston 113). Trends- Describe how technology, new organizational structures, diversified training, and other management or economic trends are affecting the career Learning can be influenced by several factors like attention, incentive and feelings as well as by student’s characteristics like previous knowledge, intellectual and learning techniques and cognitive capabilities (Winston 234). Aquino, in her study, discovered that the students taking Computer Engineering do not ask questions to their close relatives concerning assignments provided for them in institutions because several parents now do not have time to discuss school matters with their children (1116). Technology affects Computer Engineering because it involves innovations, diffusion of technology, which requires a comprehensive analysis with proper training of teachers to implement the new technological developments (Mansfield 398). In several communities, development of technology has allowed the development of several economies in societies. Through technology, both students and teachers can communicate across the world making them share experiences and learn from one another (Winston 114). Professions in Computer Engineering and Technology Development continue to expand through technological developments. Students in Computer Engineering and technical education centers are likely to be employed after graduation (Castells 29). In the previous years, learners can opt for continuing education classes or take distance-learning courses in Computer Engineering at several colleges or universities offering the course (Castells 29). This process can be long and very complicated which turn out to affect the entire education process. Using developed internet services; the students can take online courses and interact with their teachers directly without complications (Castells 29). New organizational structures allow organizations members to express themselves, allocate responsibilities for diverse functions and developments to different levels within an organization. It does all these activities by providing a basis on which normal operational processes and sequences of all activities. Secondly, these structures control the individuals who get to work in the process of making decision, and therefore to the degree their opinions form the organization’s activities (Winston 115). The organizational structures regulate how the responsibilities, power, and duties are allocated, coordinated, and organized, and how communication flows within the organization. This can in turn affect the entire process of education within the engineering program. Winston noted that by enabling diverse training programs improves employee retention, reduces workforce harassment, increases morale, and improves recruitment efforts to establish a more diversified working environment (117). Diversity training occurs during seminars during which experts discuss problems related to diverse viewpoints with employees at a business place. The diversity programs put the employees at ease and improve the opinion of the organization due to its commitment to establishing a fair and equal work environment where all the employees are treated with respect. Salary Information The average annual income for computer engineers is $98,820. The highest 10% earn above $148,910, the lowest 10% earn less than $60,690, and the middle 50% earn between $77,280 and $124,120(Winston 115). Computer engineers earn an average starting salary of $61,738, one of the highest starting salaries offers among all bachelor degree holders. A computer engineer must have broad technical skills to outline and select software components for a design. This involves understanding technical language such as Java, C++, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, UML and SERVLET designs (Winston 115). Describe the skills or abilities typically used by persons in this career. The students need to have the proficiency to identify major differences involving operating systems like DOS, windows, Mac and Linus. Communication and interaction is a critical aspect of a Computer Engineer’s job. They must work together with managers and business owners of organization projects or directly with clients if he is working on coming up with solutions for clients (Winston 115). A Computer Engineer must, therefore, have the proper communication skills in order to communicate the possibility of a project budget, update managers, or clients on the activities conducted, and be in a position to carry out presentations on computer development projects (Winston 115). As described in the Myer-Briggs, and Strong-Skills tests, an individual should be in a position to use proper communication skills interact with workers and use different styles to accomplish projects (Briggs et al 119). A Computer Engineer must also possess a wide range of research and training skills especially if working in a managerial position. Possibilities in the information technology sector and computer industry are continually evolving and expanding. The computer engineer must therefore be able to research and learn new programming options to provide the best outcome for clients or a company (Winston 116). Computer Engineers often work with the design and development process of computer software for clients and or within a company. A Computer Engineer must, therefore, have the appropriate trouble shooting and decision-making skills to be able to pick the best option for the program development project in question (Winston 117). Explain what kinds of organizations hire persons in this major/career; what industries are involved; are persons self-employed in this career? About seven percent of Computer Engineers (except software designers and engineers) are self-employed. This percentage is considered average for the industry as a whole. Roughly, four percent remain unemployed and the remaining work for computer companies such as HP, Intel, and industries that use or build computer-based systems such as automotive, telecommunication, product development, manufacturing, and aerospace. Several engineers also acquire jobs as programmers (Castells 30). Explain if employment in the career is dominated by a particular gender or ethnic group. The Computer-Engineering field has always had a gender problem. Men tend to dominate this field, and for women, the number is not growing. A 2011 report by Castells found only one out of seven Computer Engineers is female (31). Currently, women hold only 28% of all the Computer-Engineering jobs and the numbers are not increasing. The problem begins at childhood where girls are rarely encouraged to pursue science and mathematics (Castells 31). In addition, there exists a stereotype that Mathematics and Sciences are typically a male field while Arts and Humanities are female fields. These ideologies further inhibit girls’ likelihood of developing and interest in science and mathematics. White men have previously dominated the engineering field, but grant programs that target females, blacks and other minority groups are being implemented to diversify this field (Castells 33). Describe how persons find employment in this career; how long does a job search last? A person starts his Computer Engineer career by first looking for proper and credible recruitment agencies to represent him for his employment. Reliable recruitment agencies are those that have good recruiting records. Job posting on the internet is also a good way of finding an employer in Computer Engineering jobs (Castells 34). A graduate can also ask referrals from his graduate school or university. Getting employment in Engineering takes between two to three years, or more depending on an individual’s academic qualifications and job experience. There are, however, situations where students have gotten jobs whilst undertaking their final studies in graduate school (Castells 35). Review and describe a typical job notice in this career that is of personal interest to you. Most computing companies require their employees to provide a month job notice before resigning from their current job. The process of shortening the resignation notice with annual leave is important. The job requires the employee to make a one-month notice period under the worker handbook to shorten the resignation notice with their annual leave. This implies that the organization will provide notice and work for two weeks and another two weeks to offset their annual leave so that they can leave earlier (Castells 35). Describe the physical environment, stress level, type of supervision, customer/client contact, hours, work-related travel, etc. Computer engineers often work in well-lit comfortable offices or in computer laboratories, but may travel extensively to worksites locally or abroad. Most engineers spent forty hours working in a week. Their work is full of accomplishments in a lot of projects thus they work at night and over the weekends to beat deadlines or solve sudden technical problems. Computer systems managers plan, control, direct and assess the activities organizations analyze, develop and administer computer software, networks and information systems (Castells 45). The managers control the expenditures of the department, organization, or project. They assemble and manage units of information system personnel to develop, implement, and administer telecommunications and computer software. Computer engineers gather information from their clients before starting on a project to find more information about their needs (Castells 55). Describe the major or fields of study related to preparation for working in the career. In normal circumstances, computer engineers must have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering for graduate recruitment positions (Hubbard and Anthony 232). However, Science and Mathematics majors can find jobs in high demand fields. Most programs for computer engineers include courses in mathematics, sciences, general engineering, social sciences, laboratory classes, and computers. After the standard 4-year Computer-Engineering bachelor’s degree, many colleges offer a 2 and 4 years engineering technology degrees. These programs offer students a hands-on technique to learning new issues in engineering as opposed to the usual theoretical approaches (Hubbard and Anthony 233). Certificate/License- Identify and licenses or certification required in the career, if any are there requirements for states where you plan to reside? A qualified Computer-Engineering graduate needs a bachelor degree certificate in computer engineering. The course takes about four years after that students can seek for employment from different firms in the government. The students are also required to obtain a course in Physics, Calculus, Chemistry, and should have a good background in computers (Hubbard and Anthony 234). Computers engineers do not require a certificate to work in any organization they mainly require a license when they want to start their own companies. The process of obtaining a license entering graduating an accredited institution and obtaining four years of experience as well as passing exams. After gaining four years’ experience in computer engineering, it is important to take a second exam in the process of providing the license (Hubbard and Anthony 235). Affections- Specify professional or union organizations international, national and regional, state, local? An engineering body is an organization established with the aim of awarding several professional with professional designations like European engineers, Chartered engineer, Professional engineer and incorporated engineer (Hubbard and Anthony 235). Describe the current and projected job openings in the career, regional influences, industry changes, etc. Current job openings in engineering are expected to expand because of rapid technological development. Employees also like to receive a lot of money. Most organizations create salary choices for different jobs (Hubbard and Anthony 236). Low or poor pays offered by most organizations doe’s affect employee turnover, and this makes experts become self-employed by establishing their own engineering firms. The ambitious graduates usually strive for better responsibilities as they obtain experience. Therefore, responsibility is a key factor in determine chances of employment among graduates seeking for improved opportunities (Hubbard and Anthony 236). Several engineers work on the development of very big systems that assimilate several components and many computers. For instance, they make computational networks, which gather the sources of hundreds, even several of computers for execution of intensive calculations that go beyond the ability of one computer. Several aspects of these engineering are interwoven with the purpose and management of devices and instruments, and thus, the link between these engineering and other engineering is usually difficult to describe. These engineers also take part in developing information grids, which permit the sharing and organization of large information within an organization like medical information about patients in the community by doctors, or weather-related and other ecological information obtained by several experts (Julie, Robert, and Carl 230). Finally, several engineers specializing in computers get involved in forming networks used in communication that connect several computers, devices, actuators, and purpose instruments (Hill 111). The computer manufacturing companies serves in all mechanical sectors, comprising of aerospace, transport, construction, communications, medicine, power, consumer microchip technology, education, and mechanical manufacturing (Vincenti 45). According to Blockley these computer industries are strong and developing, and they take advantage of modern architectures, resources, and strategies that improve competence, speed, flexibility, and storage competences of computer techniques (344) Discuss how working in this career affects family roles, marriage, leisure options and vacations. Computer Engineering affects people’s life styles in different ways, for instance, most engineers these computer period has transformed the way people get information, perspective, and the manner they communicate. Newspapers are still common, although current advertisers provide a page on the web where clients can obtain information than make adverts on magazines. Most engineers spent a lot of their time working in engineering firms than taking care of their families and this contributes to many marriage problems (Hubbard and Anthony 235). Most of these computer engineers spend a lot of time conducting in depth research to discover new knowledge and to dis approve facts about innovations. In conclusion, Computer Engineering provides the community with several important utilities. Both computer engineers and computers have an impact on the general societal well-being and security, as well as medical and healthcare, the societal background, life quality, transport, supply of food, processing information, and entertainment. These engineers play an important role in in the making of computer hardware but mainly their duties involve incorporation with control structures, commercial and engineering actuators, and electronic motorized devices. Alternatively, these engineers are progressively involved with controlling software, which controls their systems and devices. These engineers usually have to get knowledge and comprehend subjects like those that computer databases, architectures, graphics, and languages used in computers.
