Reading comprehension is given prime importance in a literary program because without it the written words do not have any meaning for the reader and are mere symbols. A person who develops a good reading comprehension during early stages of his life can lead a successful life because he is in a much better position to understand the meaning of the words he reads (Blachowicz, Blachowicz & Ogle, 2008). A literacy program cannot be considered complete without incorporating reading comprehension because without it all other learning practices are meaningless.

A person having a wonderful vocabulary but weak reading comprehension skills cannot make use of the high vocabulary unless he develops good reading comprehension because without it the words of a sentence only have individual meaning. Reading comprehension is a continuous process which a person continues to develop during the course of his life as he advances from reading nursery rhymes to comics and then newspapers and magazines. 2. The very first step for supporting the students for developing comprehension skills is helping them in predicting the meaning of the text on the basis of their knowledge of things.

The next thing is to make the students read and the teacher has to monitor the students while they read to find out the difficulties they face in understanding the subject matter of the words that they are reading. After carefully assessing the level of understanding of the students, clarification of things should be made to them and they should be allowed to ask questions. Questions are very effective in this regard because they encourage students to read and monitor their understanding of things (Harvey & Goudvis, 2007).
