Learning Outcomes 1.1 PE1 Knowledge Base The course that engineering students were introduced to entailed having the basic knowledge of engineering and how it can be related to other sciences such as math and others. The students are given a summary of everything that they are bound to study in the subject. They are given the fundamental basics of science and engineering, how to communicate effectively as an engineer who is professional, in-depth technical competence, how to provide solutions to a given problem in the society using the knowledge acquired, providing operational performance through implementation of the engineering concepts, the possibilities of becoming a leader through effective implementation of the engineering course, application of principles that are important for development in the society and using information received effectively among other knowledge acquired (Engineers Australia, p.3). Besides knowing how operate electrical machines, engineering also helps one to be in a position to embrace other new forms of technology since this is one of the biggest improvement that engineers in the world should take advantage of. Most of the improvement that has been made in the modern world is by the use of technology which happens to be a product of modern engineering. Designing new technology also becomes an easy task to carry out since it only entails implementing engineering concepts in that field and learning to understand other subjects that are related to it. The base knowledge of engineering gives a student the chance to evaluate and know which branch of engineering they can go and study since this also requires one to have the basic knowledge and also the interest of studying the topic at large. As the students continue with the course of engineering, it is easy for them to understand all the other fundamental basic concepts after the knowledge base has been well explained to them. 1.1.1 PE1.1 Knowledge of science and engineering fundamentals There are specific topics that an engineering student is supposed to be acquainted with such as physics and mathematics since the all lay in the category of engineering and they almost have the same concepts in understanding. The basic knowledge that an engineer student gained in mathematics and physics are highly applicable in engineering thus when the course is being taught, it is easy for a student with a good mathematical background to understand it better as compared to one without the basic knowledge since it very important. In order to succeed in this area it is very important for students to positive attitudes towards the subjects being learned since their attitudes also matter a lot. The knowledge that students acquired in mathematics are well applied when it comes to making analysis and information data when it comes to engineering and other important synthesis that are very important in this unit. The students are meant to study other foundations of science that are closely related to engineering since it can help them to understand the main concepts easily and this means that the students are taught to appreciate all aspects of science that can be applicable in engineering as a course. During the introduction of the basic fundamentals of science and engineering, students are also trained to become engineers who can work in collaboration while demonstrating their skills in different areas of engineering discipline so as to bring out a perfect outlook of that field. 1.2.1 PE 1.2 Communicating effectively as a professional Engineer Communication is one of the most attribute that one should have in order to become successful in the modern society since it is through effective communication that people get to interact in the society. There is no profession that does not require communication thus it helps one to be in a better position to share ideas that can contribute to the success of an individual or a group of people. Communication can be categorized into either informal or formal but provided that they are aimed at making economic and social sense in the society then any can be applicable although it should be done according to who is being regarded. Engineering as a course trains the students to interact with all types of people in the society thus they should have effective communication skills be it informal or formal (Engineers Australia, p.4). They are taught to share the knowledge that they have acquired in relation to daily activities that different people do in the society thus they are taught to communicate as engineer professionals. Engineer students are aware that they will have to meet individuals from different communities and so they are taught to avoid incidences of language barrier since this can contribute a lot to their failure as engineers in the society. An engineer should be able to communicate effectively both in written and verbal form since they will be required to present themselves in front of many people thus having knowledge on how to explain concepts to both non-technical and technical people in the society is very important for them. Having competency in both verbal and written English is very important since this is one of the only ways in which one can avoid language barrier in the society and make his work as an engineer very effective. In order to communicate with a client or another engineer, it is very important to be precise in communicating so as not to waste time for other things to be done. During effective communication one should only be focused on the fundamental things in a business since other things may not be very important and through doing this the standards are followed in order and work is done effectively. For an engineer who is able to communicate with a range of communities in the society, it is easy for them to have better and fruitful performance as compared to those who are limited to few languages and this is one of the reasons as to why they are advised to learn other international languages so as to increase their chances of succeeding in the engineering careers in the society. As part of effective communication, an engineer should always give other people a chance to air their opinions since this one of the ways in which both parties will come to an understanding and agree on what they can do together. When an engineer does not give another party the chance to speak then he is not portraying the personality of a good communicator. Listening to others and waiting to be listened to is what makes professional communication effective and thus creating mutual understanding and collaboration in the society. Effective communication is one of the attributes that can define a successful engineer in the society since it can lead to good discussion and negotiation. 1.2.2 PE 1.3 In-depth technical competence Engineering is a subject that is composed of other combined studies in science like mathematics and others thus an engineer should prove to be having some competence in at least one of the science like mathematics since this is what will help him understand the concepts of engineering (Engineers Australia, p.5). This is very important because it means that when there is an issue arising in engineering then it is easy to consult an engineer who has more knowledge on one of the branches of Science that requires regulations. 2.1 PE 1.3 Techniques and resources In this semester engineer students are taught different techniques and resources and the way they are to be used and implemented in the studies. We learned how different devices are used and how they behave under different circumstances hence we were able to come up with our own scientific conclusions as to why it the results were that way because it was what we had been taught in class. 3.1 PE 1 .3.0 Validity of Claims In my second semester I was required to do a lot of practical work in the laboratories for several hours with different equipments. This is when most of my practical works took place and hence the time when I maximized on my safety forms of electronic equipment and so on. I ensured hat I have done all the practical experiments that were necessary such as the power shock and others. I ensured that I have done all the experiments that had been proving to be difficult to me and that is how I managed to prepare myself for my final test. Through working tirelessly I can proudly say that I have become a hardworking man in the society because most of the things that I do now require dedication and commitment and I am able to adhere to that in all possible ways. Even though the scientific practical that I did in this semester proved to be challenging, they were worthwhile because I managed to get some good results that were convincing to both I and my lectures. The projects that I indulged myself in this semester turned out to be some of the best since through them I was able to learn to work with a team and not just rely on my own strength and focusing on several aspects of science in deeper details (Engineers Australia, p.7). 3.1 PE 3.1 Competence in written and spoken English Engineering students have been taught to demonstrate high levels of both spoken and written English so as to communicate effectively with different people and different communities in the society and they have also been trained to make effective presentations in their technical reports and team orals. I took the initiate of editing the research reports that our team presented and wrote the format and thesis statement for the report. Our team had very many meetings that I chaired before doing our presentation and even when our team members were to include power point slides in the presentation they consulted me and I supported them in doing it. My team members chose to take all the notes that our lecturers had given us and I underlined the important points that were to be presented. Other consultation of library materials such as books and hand outs were all left to me by the team members because I have proved to be effective and competent in both spoken and written English. After assisting with all the presentations and formatting of our team’s reports, I was able to proof read the report and do the final corrections while consulting my English professor from a nearby college. I was chosen to attend several conferences of engineers that will help me improve in my engineer research work and that was an experience of a life time since I was able to interact with great engineers from all over the world who attended these conferences. During the conferences that I attended, I also participated by asking and answering several questions that I was asked. At the moment I am able to do any presentation related to engineering in English fluently. 3.2 PE 3.5 Ability to function effectively as an individual and as a team member I have been able to start my own engineer business related firm in which I have employed over twenty five engineer graduates who have been working in my firm for the past 15 years. I have a family with six healthy children who are studying with my first daughter being a fourth year law student in the University and two others in second year doing education. The trainings that I underwent as an engineer student ahs helped me know how to deal with issues affecting me and people surrounding like my family, colleagues, workmates and my workers since I have learned to be collaborative in the society and I have been taught effective communication skills which are very important. I have been able to organize several meetings with my workers and been able to chair the meetings effectively and I have been able to expand my business to neighboring countries such as Canada and México where I have already set small offices there. Currently am working on other plans of increasing my business and making more investments in countries that I suppose could have clients that need my services (Engineers Australia, p.7). 3.3 PE 3.6 Self Evaluations and Grade Nomination As an active engineer student, I have ensured that I have participated in all the competitions and other engineering meetings in this semester. I have contributed in almost all the necessary projects that could contribute to my success as an engineer student and this has made it possible for me to contribute a lot of ideas towards positive outcomes of the projects. My performance in everything that I have done as a student has been interesting since both I and my lecturers are happy with them and my eagerness to learn ha proved to be reproductive. I do believe that I have done my level best as an engineer student thus I should be highly rewarded for my effort and a distinction will be ideal. 4.1 PE 4.1 applying the principles of sustainable design and development After concluding our studies on functions of different devices and tools, we were able to in a position to focus on positive development and design sustainability. We also focused on improving our relationship with people with different professions in the society so as to uplift our own engineering projects since though doing this we can also make an impact in our society (Engineers Australia, p.6).
