Traumatic Brain Injury - Case Study Example

Mr. Randall Owens was transferred to a medical facility by paramedics where a CT scan of his brain was done.  He was discovered to have suffered from cerebral contusions, the fracture in the right orbital, and base of the skull, right frontal of the skull, right rib and ecchymosed on the right eye. Due to the experience, he suffered from trauma which worsened the situation. After eight days in the hospital, Randall was discharged from hospitalization. For three weeks Mr. Owens was under physical therapy and on speech therapy for a further six weeks.

After 8 months, Mr. Owens visited a full-time day treatment clinic in our comprehensive post-acute rehabilitation center where he was found to have more complications which included a decrease in his visual processing speed, decrease in his binocular vision, and errors in word-finding, reduced verbal fluency, and a general decrease in his reasoning. For two weeks Mr. Owen was forced to participate in a full-time treatment program. Afterward, it transitions to a part-time program which was administered in a rehabilitation center.

He was discharged after two weeks.  after six months he was still not able to operate his construction company which he had started before the accident. He was required to be physically available at construction sites and in the office for 12 hours every day. This was not possible as he had to attend therapy sessions.  at the same time, he also had a challenge in remembering job details and communicating with clients, his two employees, and other stakeholders. This leads to reduced profits and operations of the company which is his main source of income.

 For him to perform basic tasks like taking a shower he has to be accompanied by another individual which leads to time wastage, since at that time the accompanying individual would be doing something else. He is also not able to travel alone as he has to be transported to either workplaces or homes. This was not the case before the accident. Mr. Owen’s family was forced to spend most of the family resources on his treatment and maintenance. The family also received support from willing family members and friends.

This support was however not enough and the family was left with a huge deficit in the maintenance of the illness. This dependence on donations and grants would lead to more challenges for the family and their friends. Close ties would be broken. Due to the abnormal behavior shown by Mr. Owen, members of society would despise him and would highly disrespect him as opposed to before where they had huge respect for him. His neighbors mourned and were horrified by his condition. The neighbors and relatives were negatively affected emotionally.

At times the family would be consoled by their neighbors and relatives raising their hopes that one day he would recover from this illness. The visitors were in numbers and this would create a mourning environment in the homestead. The rehabilitation process was enacted with the primary goal of ensuring that Mr. Owen was able to recover to normalcy both physically and emotionally. Cognitive rehabilitation was also done which mainly aims at improving his ability to interpret information just like a normal human being.

This rehabilitation was also aimed at ensuring that he was able to perform mental functions. To improve his visual and auditory attention, Mr. Owens was expected to attend training programs on the same. Another therapy that Mr. Owen underwent included pharmacotherapy which involved treatment with amantadine. It helped to improve his arousal and speed up his rate of functional recovery. All these therapies cost money which Mr. Owen had gotten from a bank as a loan and from selling his company`s assets.

He has also organized some fundraisers to enable him to meet the heavy bills.
