Proposed Crown Sydney Resort Name Institutional Affiliation Instructor Date The main objective of this report is to give detail information of about the proposed Crown Sydney Resort. This will be one of the major developments in the history of Sydney for the last decade. The proposed development is going to be one of the largest international hotels and probably the first to be established in Sydney. The fact that the project is set to be constructed at one of the beautiful harbours in the world not only gives it uniqueness but also a chance of being a global landmark building. The proposed resort will be an iconic, luxury six-star which will incorporate all gaming facilities for VIP. The proposed location of the hotel resort is set to be at the north western corner of Barangaroo South. The area is relatively adjacent to Barangaroo central and the Sydney Harbour. However, the exact location is subject to the approval of the New South Wales government. It is a sizeable project which comprising 350 rooms and projected 2000 job opportunities that would come with the Crown Resort. While there existed many companies interested in the construction and operation of this world class resort, Crown is the only company with the capacity to deliver a combined and uniquely designed package of its own. To facilitate the initiation of the project, Crown signed an n agreement with Lend Lease Corporation Limited. As per the agreement, the two would work hand in development of the plan for the proposed hotel resort. This would take a period of two years. As part of the operational requirement, Crown will have to an operational casino license before proceeding with the construction process of the propose Crown Sydney Resort. The license is very essential in that it allows the company to operate gaming facilities meant for the VIP only. History of Land Use Prior to the settlement of the colonialists, the Barangaroo region was mainly occupied by the Aborigines of Australia. The major activities associated with the region by then were hunting, shipping and fishing. Workers used to walk on a daily basis in search of paying jobs without success, hence the name “The Hungry Mile” (Chadbourne & Dahlie, 1978). The rock engravings as well as big shells found near the site are an indication of the occupation of the site by the native people. About 1500 indigenous people were estimated to have been living in Barangaroo region at the time when the Europeans came in. however, the population dropped drastically due to an outbreak of smallpox. Some developments began in the 1830. This was evident with the construction of windmills and later buildings (Benckendorff et al., 2010).The Australian Gas Light Company was completed in 1843 to run gas work activities. This meant that the company needed more houses to accommodate its employees near the company’s location. In addition more shipping activities intensified due to the transportation of coal for use in the company by boats. However, the New South Wales Government, in 2003, came up with policies that would transform the city from shipping, hunting and fishing activities to a commercial and recreational center. Since the inception of the redevelopment by the government, the transformation process has taken several stages right from designing contests to those of actual development of the concept plan. With the management of Barangaroo Delivery, many activities in the site have undergone relocation, e.g. the stevedoring facilities. The land is currently under major developments, proposed Crown Sydney Resort among them, and the whole developments anticipated to be through by the year 2023. The plans for redeveloping the area subdivide the process into three sections depending on the region. That is Barangaroo South and Central as well as the Headland Park. In the Barangaroo South, several landmarks were and still being constructed. These include hotels, apartments, retail outlets, office buildings as well as the public spaces. These developments are the extensions of the Sydney’s Central Business District. The most outstanding landmarks to be in this region are the three towers, IT1, IT2 and IT3. Both IT1 and IT3 are set to be completed in 2016 while IT2 is expected 2015 (Elder, 2008). On the other hand, Barangaroo Central is one site proposed for the development of civic, commercial and low-rise residential buildings. With the most favorable climate and harbour, Sydney was expected to be one of the top tourist destinations around the world. This was however not the case as the region lacked sufficient tourist infrastructural investments. This is why the proposal for construction of the Crown Sydney Resort was made. After considerate approach, it was agreed that Barangaroo was the most suitable place as it had harbourside and waterfront location in the Central Business District of Sydney. The Crown Company was thus approved in the November 2013 and given the casino license which as positioned in Barangaroo. The last history of Barangaroo land use is the area covering six hectares, the Headland Park. Proposed construction developments in the area include the car park and a cultural facility. With reference to the current and proposed developments in the area, it is quite remarkable that land has been utilized well to spur economic growth. Since the time of settlement of the indigenous people in Barangaroo, many physical and social landmarks have been constructed to suit the dynamics of the changing world (Mobilereference, 2007). However, the development is a continuous process marked by constriction of post-modern or mega-structures like the proposed Crown Sydney Resort, in Barangaroo Central, Sydney. Owing to the changes in global economy, land has been constantly appreciating. Any space is therefore very valuable and must be utilized to the maximum capacity. In the earlier period, Barangaroo land was not fully utilized. Land around this area was instead used for basic use without any incorporation of commercial usage. This was probably due to lack of information or adequate resources to stimulate development. The proposed construction of Crown Sydney Resort is intended to achieve several social and economic goals as discussed as follows. Economic Reasons The proposed Crown Sydney Resort is intended to ensure that the New South Wales is in a better position for competing with not only domestic but also international destinations for tourist. Due to the stiff competition in the global tourist markets, many cities are investing greatly in new assets of tourist interests so as to increase their global visitor market share (Riewoldt, 2006). The New South Wales’ Visitor Economy Report revealed that it was necessary for the government to renew its tourism approach if it was to contain the completion in the sector. Therefore, there is no doubt that the proposed Crown Sydney Resort is going to make Sydney one of the most-eyed tourist destinations in the world. It is also aimed at increasing the number of domestic tourism. With the construction of this world class resort, the New South Wales’ performance in domestic tourism is expected to be improved. This is because the resort is expected to attract a section if not the all Australians who travel overseas for holidays to Sydney. Social Reasons The capacity for accommodation in Sydney is lower than the visitation demand. Sydney has been experiencing a shortage of accommodation facilities for a long period. The proposed Crown Sydney Resort is aimed at addressing the issue of congestion in Sydney’s hotels (Reisinger, 2009). This six-star hotel will be an addition to the number of hotel rooms in Sydney. It is thus expected to solve the acute shortage of accommodation in Sydney’s hotels. The resort will be equipped with modern furniture and interior designs as shown in the picture below. The resort will also serve as accommodation facility for the large number of overnight visitors which is projected to double by 2020. As an attraction site, the proposed Crown Sydney Resort is intended to pull the wealthy tourists not only into the resort but also the VIP facilities available for gaming. The combination of the proposed resort and the naturally beautiful city will definitely be a point of interest for majority of wealth tourists (Smith, 2010). The interior design of the proposed Crown Sydney Resort displays magnificent features which would be attractive to many visiting the place. Conclusion In conclusion, the developments and constructions on lad are very significant landmarks and that each construction has a purpose. The purpose may vary from physical ones such as creation of a major landmark to economic and social purposes. Construction of major building for instance the proposed Crown Sydney Resort require a lot of skills right from development of concept plan to the commencement of construction. Though the entire process may be associated with a lot of financial use, the advantages of such developments normally outweighs the disadvantages. Nonetheless, it is important to take account of the nature of land available and soil structure before setting up a building. Land study helps in avoiding risks associated with construction of unsuitable buildings in certain areas. A study and mapping of the surrounding landmarks is also significant as it determines how the proposed building will affect the immediate and non-immediate developments within the proximity of the proposed development project.
