Environmental Sustainability Name: Institution: Environmental Sustainability Part 1 Environmental pollution is a topic discussed by majority of people worldwide. Hence, people are being requested by various government and non-governmental agencies to practice environmental sustainability. This involves making sound decisions and taking actions with the aim of protecting natural environment to create a good environment suitable for human life. Most of the businesses and individuals have realized the impact of their activities on environment. Thus, it is important for the parties involved in environmental pollution to put appropriate measures in place to create a favorable natural world capable of supporting human life. Some of the key strategies that can should be employed include; reduction of waste, consumption of less power or energy, and development of recycling processes (Morelli, 2013, p. 19). Studies have been conducted to assess the impact of different human activities on environment. Therefore, many businesses and organizations have become very active in creating awareness on the need for environmental sustainability. There are many ways of polluting environment; pollution of water bodies e.g. lakes, rivers, and oceans, pollution of atmosphere by burning of materials such as fossils, deforestation to clear fields for agricultural practices, and agricultural practices that are unsustainable and destructive. Unfortunately, many organizations have been accused of environmental pollution, although some of them tend to engage in practices that threaten human life. Programs and policies that are aimed to discourage atmospheric pollution forces these organizations to meet the standards required when undertaking their operations. However, majority of organizations have been on the front line in the fight against environment pollution (Morelli, 2013, p. 22). Therefore, Just-in-Time Fabrications (JTF) Company must come up with ways of preventing environmental pollution for the sake of the neighboring residential houses, fishing pond, and school. The first step that JTF should take is to ensure that it has a good waste products management program. Waste management can only be successful if the waste products can be reused, reduced, or recycled. Recycling of the waste involves production of useful products or materials from the waste products. Therefore, water recycling reduces the amount of waste products disposed to the environment. Moreover, waste management reduces the cost of waste disposal and motivates everyone person who works within the company or whoever visits the premises to follow waste management principles. In most companies, many waste bins are strategically located around the compound in which people throw papers, wrappers, and other unneeded materials (Virginia, 2010, p. 89). Additionally, when a product is being designed, its environmental effect should be considered. There are many tools and techniques, which are employed when designing an environmental friendly product depending on the organization’s standards and policies. For example, if Just-in-Time Fabrications Company wants to fabricate products by using steel metals that do not have negative effect on environment, it must use metals that are mercury and carbon free. In order to save the amount of resources used in production of the materials, the company can opt to produce commodities that only require a lot of materials when being manufactured (Donato, 2013). Participation of stakeholders in solving of environmental problems is crucial. It creates a good platform for exchange of ideas and sound decisions are made. However, the company’s environmental policies must allow participation of stakeholders. When any environmental challenge is discussed by the company’s leaders and the stakeholders, an effective solution that will prevent future recurrence of the event is attained. Government bodies are stakeholders that influence Just-in-Time Fabrications Company’s operations aimed to sustain environment. To start with, legislation determines the number of agencies that promulgate given regulations. Thus, government plays a key role in ensuring all decisions made by the company conserve environment. Most of the JTF Company’s operational decisions are made in order to improve or to strengthen the relationship between the community or customers and the organization. Therefore, local communities are stakeholders that influence any decision made by JTF Company. Community and customer pressures influence the need for environmental sustainability of the company’s products. When JTF makes carries out practices to improve the surrounding environment, the community becomes happy and supports the company operations by buying its products (Lorente, 2012, p. 5). Just-in-Time Fabrication Company uses energy, raw material, and water to produce high quality products that meet international standards. The inputs used to produce products have various impacts on global and local environment. To start with, energy is essential because it used to power all manufacturing processes and machines. TJF mostly uses electricity and oil as sources of power. Therefore, the quantity of energy that is used by the company should be minimized in order to save energy. Consequently, the natural sources used to produce energy will be sparingly used, thus environment will be conserved. Water is another crucial material used in production of products in many companies. However, nowadays companies are forced to look for alternative sources due to increased droughts, changes in water quality and quantity, availability of water, and competition over the available sources. Contaminated water from industrial manufacturing processes should not be disposed to nearby water bodies such as river and lakes that are used by the local community as sources of water for domestic use. This is because contaminated water contains chemicals and other harmful substances that endanger human lives. To avoid water pollution JTF should recycle water and use it to carry other functions such as cleaning of floors and pavements along the compound, cleaning of company vehicles, industrial cooling systems, among others (Pepsico International, 2004, p.8). Just-in-Time Fabrication Company must produce products that will attract more consumers, but at the same time satisfy their needs. In order to achieve this, the company must produce products that will not pollute environment. Therefore the company must ensure that the products meet the required standards during manufacturing, packaging, and transportation. JTF company’s transportation vehicles must be well maintained to avoid noise and air pollution, and the packing materials used should easily degrade or decompose when improperly disposed. All waste products should be properly disposed through burning or any other method that would minimize or eliminate them (Morelli, 2013, p.4). Part 2 Just-in-Time Fabrication company is at risk of litigation from its operations because the area where heating oil tanks that supplies a central boiler house for raising stem is located should be well confined and out of bound for unauthorized person. Litigation is a legal procedure where all parties concerned present their arguments and ideas against one another before the judge or arbitrator. In United States, civil litigation is conducted under strict civil procedure rules. Therefore, litigants follow a given a protocol in regard to a set of courtroom procedures and pre-trial behavior. Litigation process is concluded via court settlements, formal court ruling, or successful pretrial. Additionally, litigation requires legal advice from a group of litigation solicitors before any decision is made. A person can die or receive severe injuries of he or she play or tamper any part of heating oil tanks plant. The site is surrounded on three sides by a two high chain link fence, but the company must ensure that the holes that are present along the fence are completely sealed. Moreover, the company must respond to any complaints raised by the members of the public concerning pollution. The public has raised complaints about the bad smell from the paint spraying building and the noise from company’s vehicles. The company must ensure it is in full control of both noise and air pollution (Kerley, 2011, p.7). Environmental protection Act 1990 refers to environment pollution as the process of releasing harmful substances into air, water, and land thus endangering human lives. Thus, Environmental Protection Act does not favour any form of pollution and ensures that those organizations that carry out illegal operations are legally dealt with. Any industrial process is either governed by local pollution authorities or Integrated Pollution control. Industrial processes that are governed by Integrated Pollution Control include petroleum refining, waste disposal, mining processes, chemical production, and power generation. Local pollution control authorities regulate any other manufacturing process. Environmental permitting (England and Wales) Regulations States discourages any form of pollution that can harm property or human. It advocates for pollution prevention measures to be put in place before any operations commences within an organization. Both environmental Protection Act 1990 and Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 regulates Just-in-time Fabrications Company’s operations by ensuring that pollution control measures are put in place. This way the community living around the company enjoys pollution free environment, hence people do not suffer from any pollution-related disease (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, 2011). All stakeholders and leaders of Just-in-Time Fabrication Company play a key role in making of sound operational and managerial decisions. All manufacturing or production processes carried out within or outside the premises are governed by the local authority. It ensures that all processes meet the required standards and any complaint raised by the community against the business is addressed accordingly. The company must meet all the conditions that govern waste management in respect to disposal and storage. The government holds the company responsible if improperly disposed waste products cause death of any person or causes any form of a disease. Local Environment Agency regulates waste management of organizations by issuing licenses. In addition, the agency keeps records of a record of all organizations around the area and indicates whether the license issued has been modified or not. The licenses define the terms and conditions that JTF Company is carrying out. Therefore, it is the role of the organization to ensure that the necessary terms and conditions are met before any activity is carried out. These regulators ensure that environmental legislation for every organization is done according to national wide environmental law and policies. JTF has a right to choose any investment project that fits its financial budget or will improve the quality of its products. However a project proposal must be passed by the local authorities before the actual project commences (Environmental Agency, 2013).
