Those countries that exhibit low economic development are referred to as Least Developed Countries (LCD). There are 49 countries worldwide according to United Nations that don’t meet the required criteria hence rated as Least Developed. One such country is Malawi. Malawi is situated in the southern region of Africa in the sub-tropical region. Malawi borders countries like Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. Malawi experienced some equatorial rains in February and March which is usually accompanied by thunderstorms.

Malawi is usually affected by several environmental issues like deforestation which usually leads to pollution of lakes as well as soil erosion. This is a great danger to water bodies and environmental issues as well. The population of Malawi was around 13 million when the census was carried out in 2008. There was a 2.8 percent growth rate. Malawi’s life expectancy is 37.8 years on average. The fertility rate is approximately 5.33 with infant mortality being 122.28 deaths per 1000 children.

The highest point in Malawi is at Mount Mulanje (Sapitwa) which is approximately 3002m above sea level. In the infrastructure sector, Malawi has a well-developed infrastructure that is spread all over the country.  It has a total of 32 airports that includes those with runways and those without. It has several radio stations and 1 TV station. Internet is well established and utilized by more than 300,000 people country-wide. Malawi has a lot of historical background which started all the way from 1600 when they had 1 kingdom with one ruler.

However, things have changed for years and the only empire split into other tribes and kingdoms. Among the most notable leaders who have recently been presidents in Malawi include Kamuzu Banda, Bakili Muluzi with the current president being Bingu wa Mutharika.    Philip & Mike (2001) argue that the most notable agricultural products in Malawi include maize, cotton, sugarcane, tea, among others. Food security is a concern for people and the government of Malawi.
