Job Attitude at Apple Inc
Apple has been known for motivating its employees and making them adhere to organizational objectives. It has an organizational culture which allows employees to take risks and acquire satisfaction through achieving their goals assigned to them along with personal aspirations. It instigates a job attitude which provokes employees to think outside. It is important to note that this culture is an outcome of its leaders’ philosophy. Taking example of Steve Jobs’ work, sophistication, simplicity and innovation has been the gist of Apple’s products and same is reflected in its organizational culture and respective job attitudes as well.
Job Satisfaction: Employee Benefits & Workplace Diversity
Job satisfaction is greatly related to organizational culture and the relationship between personal objectives and goals set out through roles assigned by the management. Like stated earlier, Apple allows its employees to thrive on risks and unbeatable standards. Therefore, employees at Apple feel fulfilled as they are making a difference in the form of an exceptional product line. Celebrating diversity has been the gist of its organizational culture which allows employees and leadership to celebrate differences instead of presuming it as a mean of discrimination. Its adherence to diversity is not only reflected in an equal employment policy but also in its product portfolio (Macbook, IPhone, iPod, Apple App stores, iTunes, Safari etc) and a huge chain of suppliers and retailers (Grossman, 2005; Apple, 2012a). This idea is further strengthen through a rich biological demography of the work force and their intellectual abilities.
Furthermore, provision of monetary and non-monetary benefits also adds to job satisfaction. Benefits like suitable market competitive remuneration along with standard benefits i.e. insurance, provident fund, investment plans, health, life and disability coverage etc. and unusual benefits like flexible spending accounts, accommodation for disabled, employee commuter programs and employee stock purchase program coupled with competitive working environment plays a key role in employee satisfaction (Apple, 2012b).
Work Arrangements
In addition to diversity and smart compensation packages, Apple plays suitable attention to its work arrangements with the employees. Its culture instigates self-leadership and individuality which allows employee to be independent and accountable at the same time. Apple has introduced a unique concept of ‘Work Hard Play Hard’ philosophy in its work force. The idea is to have fun and relaxation at the work place in to order have maximum devotion to organizational objectives while staying energetic, motivated and rejuvenated. Other than on-site conventional jobs, it also allows suitable flexible work arrangements from home jobs as well. Although the policies and supervisory techniques governing this work mechanism vary accordingly but this kind of arrangements allow employees to operate from a comfortable proximity with maximum efficiency.
Employees’ Motivation
An important aspect of employee motivation is the expectation of the leadership. Every incumbent is provided with an inspirational note which makes the employees well-versed with company’s ideology. This philosophy is reflected to outside world at every step i.e. from mere application through web portal to actual screening process. Even on its online job portal, Apple has stated, “Amaze yourself, Amaze the world” (Apple, 2012b). The statement is self-explanatory and illustrates how Apple wants its employees to be inspired continuously and deliver excellence. Furthermore, it pushes its employees to work for simplicity in design and efficiency with effectiveness in operation in the form of new ideas, innovation and creativity. Therefore, instead of traditional modes of employees appraisals, effective job performance and personal excellence are perceived as the criteria for performance management.
Employees’ Moods & Emotions
Apple has developed a medium to affect its employees’ moods and emotions through its organizational culture and leadership. Where innovation is the gist of Apple’s product and its philosophy, this has become an integral part of a working environment which affects employees’ personal feelings in turn. Due to commitment to development of products having excellence, energy, motivation and individuality is well-reflected at Apple’s work place. Furthermore, its leaders also exhibit similar kind of zest and fervor. Steve Jobs is an ideal example of this notion. He, himself as a leader of the company has spent years doing experiments, questioning himself, taking inputs from other and pushing himself to do what others could not do or even think of. Resultant is a set of impeccable product line. This revolutionary figure acts as an example for employees at Apple and also for outside world (Tobak, 2010).
Organizational Behavior: Employees’ Motivation & Performance
Apple has a rather non-hierarchical structure driven by autonomy and creativity. Although it follows suitable corporate standards like formal dress code but it appreciates and thrives on digression from the standards when it comes to performance (Organizational Culture and Performance, p.48). The overall organizational behavior at Apple is performance driven. Where employees are pushed to provide excellence in delivery, they are well-compensated with the help of smartly designed remuneration package, non-monetary benefits and suitable working arrangements. Opportunity to exhibit innovation in the form of benchmarking product line and smart compensation is Apple’s secret to motivate its employees (Wilson, 2010).
