GNC Corporation is an American enterprise that focuses on retail products. Joseph Fortunato is the current CEO of GNC Corporation. It has its headquarters based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S. The key products that this company sells are Nutritional Products like vitamins, supplements, herbs, sports nutrition, energy products, etc. Now GNC Corporation wants to enter the Chinese market. GNC Corporation can use two strategies to tackle this problem. The first is to hire Chinese workers into the company so that the company’s culture will be integrated with its own culture. The second option is to use online and phone marketing to increase their consumer base.

Let us consider the first option which is to hire native Chinese workers into the company. To successfully run the operation, GNC Corporation will face the issue of cultural differences that exist between America and China. In One survey it has been recognized that cultural differences are the biggest barrier that any company faces while doing business. The management practices of America and China are different. So they need to take into consideration the cultural differences between them to be successful. There is a great difference between China and US concerning the political system, economic system, laws, and social values even though major changes have occurred in China in recent years. China works in a centralized way while the US is relatively decentralized. China follows collectivist principle. But in the US they follow the principle of individualism. US enterprises have a short-term orientation as compared to China’s long-term orientation (Baines 45).

These differences in culture greatly affect human behavior and the thinking process, and GNC must provide a platform where people from both countries can interact based on shared values. These cultural differences will impact the management practices in terms of cooperative strategies, decision-making, conflict management, motivation systems, and workgroup characteristics. American managers use open forms when faced with conflicts that are new to Chinese workers as they use assistance from third parties. Read More
