David Beckham, just like other football maestros, rose to fame in a fashion that even shocked many including some of his football mentors, and even as he sat at the apex of world football, the soft-spoken celebrity has never identified one single thing that made him tick. Having been born on May 2, 1975, David Beckham grew up in a humble family rising gradually to attract the attention of many stakeholders in the football fraternity. This in itself had a social dimension in that he was an example of people in a society who can outlive statistical odds, rising from the lowest social class to the world’s most coveted sociological position, a royal kind of status.

He first demonstrated his immense talent and potential when he won the Sir Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools National Competition only at the age of eleven and many analysts usually regard this achievement as a watershed milestone in his career, the ultimate achievement that eventually propelled him to glory. It is this achievement that endeared Beckham to the Manchester United officials who enrolled him in the training division at the age of sixteen and true to his talent, David Beckham became a regular first selection in the senior team only two years after playing for the training division.

He became so popular with the Manchester United fans that the club almost became nothing without him on the field, it was common for the fans to chat there’s only one Beckham during matches at the club (Cashmore & Parker, 2003, 214). He already had assumed a very important role as not only a football superstar but as an important epitome that many football fans looked up to for the granting of their desires. At this rate, only the sky seemed like the limit for the English wonder kid.

David Beckham went ahead to play for some of the world’s biggest clubs including Real Madrid and LA Galaxy and becoming the first English player to win the Premier League in four different countries.
