Cold comfort Question 1 At the start of the twentieth century, an air conditioner was founded by William Carrier. The idea of an air conditioner came about when Carrier thought of what would result from the interaction between the process 0of condensation of air and cooling (para, 2). The infusion of moisture into a volume of air influences its humidity level and eventually the temperature. Question 2 Since the evolution of the air conditioner, changes have been detected in the offices, movie theatres, and other premises where business takes place resulting to an increase in customers. Spending time in movie theatres and offices has been preferred by many citing the cool environment in the premises. Air conditioning has led to a difference in movie business when compared to the period before the air conditioners especially during summer; a period which such businesses otherwise used to close down (para, 11) Question 3 Air condition came as a relief to the industrial and private constructors in terms of the cost of construction. Before then buildings were installed with conditioning structures which were not needed anymore with the introduction of air conditioners. However these designs led to an increase reliance on electricity for cooling hence higher bills (para, 17). Question 4 The air conditioning technology has not changed significantly as compared to other electronics; this is due to the psychological addiction and economic dependency on the air conditioners. A blind eye have been directed on the effects that the air conditioners have to the environment (para, 4). Question 5 A few alternatives exists for the air conditioners. However there are perceived alternatives although their strength have no ability to sustain the load requirement. Wind is seasonal and this seasonality deters it as being an alternative (para, 27). Question 6 New ways of cooling need to be invested in order to reduce the greenhouse emission which degrades the environment and check on the electrical loads and costs incurred with the current machines (para, 31). Question 7 The integration of the architects, the building scientists, designers and air conditioning experts is thought as a move to come up with a building that incorporates natural cooling providence and in turn reduce on the cost of artificial cooling (para, 42). Question 8 The use of natural cooling systems in the residential buildings as an alternative to the artificial cooling systems will reduce the electricity load. This requires the installation both the artificial and natural cooling systems. When the provision for automated switching of the systems when either is applicable will increase in the cooling efficiency. (Para, 42) Work cited Behal, Michael. Cold Comfort. 2010, archive.onearth.org/print/2713 A path to sustainable energy Question 1 The world energy needs can be fully got from the green sources which are enough and readily available to match the energy needs of the world. By fully utilizing of the green energy at high efficiency, the energy cost will reduce. There exists a lot of untapped sources of green energy like wind and solar energy which an untapped potential of estimated 8200 terawatts (Jacobson, 60). High investment, space and time is involved in setting up the infrastructure for tapping these renewable sources of energy. The process of setting up the infrastructure can however be accomplished in the next one decade as the resources used will be repaid back from the bills. Question 2 Sustainable energy is affordable and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. Coal produces harmful to the environment due to its emissions and this reduce its fitness as an environmental friendly source. However coal is applied in capturing carbon; this is a process where a great amount of coal is used and hence cause environmental degradation. Using clean energy is an alternative for reducing emissions which appears expensive in the initial stages. Coal usage can continue although it should reduce to the minimum as the clean energy utilization goes on. Work cited Jacobson, Mark, and Mark Delucchi “A Path to Sustainable Energy by 2030.” 2009, web.stanford.edu/group/efmh/jacobson/Articles/I/sad1109Jaco5p.indd.pdf Essay The three essential wellsprings of sustainable power source are sun oriented, wind and hydroelectric power. Wind is at present ready to give a normal of 62.5 terawatts; sunlight based has a capability of creating 580 terawatts. Hydroelectric power is a most used wellspring of clean power. Sun based power adds to around 40 percent of the aggregate power needs on the planet; wind control satisfies 51 percent of the vitality request (Jacobson, 61). For the United States to tap and influence great utilization of the green energy, there is a need to put resources into the setting to up of framework. The framework should be dependable and conveys as much as the presently accessible foundation. Because of the irregularities in the accessibility of wind and sunlight based amid various circumstances of the day, there is a need to blend the two sources in a synchronized way to meet the power quest. Amid the conditions when both are not accessible; the hydroelectric power can be utilized to fill the power gap. The political environment and will has a considerable influence in understanding the full utilization of green power. The political class needs to establish laws and arrangements together with giving a favorable atmosphere to energy-related operations. Setting up the infrastructure to enable for the tapping of the green energy poses a significant challenge; high initial capital accompanies this. For photovoltaic cells to work, they require some mined components; the mining process is an environmental degrading one. The available photovoltaic cells may not be enough to susutaion the amount of storage batteries that ar needed in this process. Space is required when it comes to tapping green energy; for instance, wind and solar power structures are anticipated to occupy 1.33% of the earths area (Jacobson, 61). The lack of linient taxing and allocation of subsidies for setting up green energy structures is a great hinderance to the implementationm of the same. Fossil fuel marks approximately 81% of the energy used in the world. The increased cost of fossil fuel will lead to the users to seek other ways and other ways to meet their needs; in the process, the use of green energy will be embraced (Lackner 2).
