Extensive studies on oligomers and polymer systems show quite an interesting trend of dual emission from a single excitation state (2 a, b). From the observation, hence, this led to the design and statistical synthesis of copolymer P (F-S) with diverse loading of S units and engineered efficient polymer LED with extensive emission properties which approach the white light point (3).Scheme: Synthesis of p (F-S) x co-polymers. Reagents and conditions: (i) (Ph3P) 4 Pd, K2CO3 (2 M), toluene-dioxane, reflux, 60-90 h; (ii) end-capping: 4-Bu-C6H4-Br, reflux 12 h; 4-Bu-C6H4-B (OH) 2, reflux, 12 h.

Figure 3: Structure of F, S and p (F-S) xFrom the studies, both F/S copolymer and oligomers depict high quantum yield of photoluminescence both in their solid and solution state and furthermore, they illustrate a high efficiency of electroluminescence (EL) in polymer/organic LED devices (PLED/ OLED). Some of the use of OLED devices include, but not limited to, injection of electrons on LUMO and holes on HOMO energy levels, thus, producing radical anion and radical cation species, respectively.

Therefore, from the observations, it's necessary to have a deep understanding of the process involved in the formation and production of these highly charged species and their optical properties in detail. This is possible by applying the spectroelectrochemical method, whereby, the radical anions and cations are electrochemically generated in a cyclic voltammetry experiment which involves electrochemical redox reaction of the neutral molecules. Their resulting spectral properties are then monitored by the use of the electron absorption method (Figure 4).

Figure 4: Spectroelectrochemistry of FSF co-oligomerThis literature review looks into the details of spectroelectrochemical studies of different F/S copolymers and oligomers so as to appreciate the relationship between their structures and characteristics of radical cation and anion species generated from them.
