The US Constitution statute for education defines the term magnet school as a public elementary school, public secondary school, public elementary education center, or public secondary education center that offers a special curriculum capable of attracting substantial numbers of students of different racial backgrounds’ (US Department of Education). The schools promote the enrollment of multi-ethnic students by voluntary enrollment and no limitations on physical attendance. Charter schools are elementary or secondary schools that operate under the public sector but are exempted from certain rules and regulations in exchange for a certain degree of results.

Their importance lies in the radical innovational programs that they promote and there is no compulsion on people to attend them; however, parents who feel dissatisfied with the conventional methods of public schools often opt for charter schools for the education of their children. Chartering permits schools to run independently and to fashion the curricula according to the needs of the community. St. Marys County Public School is a charter school located near my home. Mass media has contributed a lot to schooling in the US.

It has raised more awareness amongst people through magazines, books, and the Internet. This awareness not only extends from knowledge of the rights of individuals but also to better education and schooling. Mass media has given publicity to the racial issues in the US, and have helped dilute racial prejudices inherent in the society. Magnet schools, therefore, have been the center of activism for Black rights. Moreover, by raising awareness about the schooling standards, mass media has created more transparency in the process of education.

Schools thus feel more accountable and are always under public scrutiny due to the access of mass media.
