The paper "Need Theories of Motivation" is a wonderful example of a management assignment. In the situation provided, it is shown that Roger is an employee of the sole department store in the small town. Apparently, Roger’ s performance has been good throughout his length of tenure in the said store and even received raises in bonuses, which means that financial rewards have already been provided to him. Nonetheless, a lack of motivation at work and his tardiness has still surfaced and requires resolution because of the record he has and the value of his performance to the company.

To this extent, it is the need for theories of motivation that are investigated in order to make recommendations for the said scenario. In the field of psychology, needs are considered to be factors that direct human behaviour (Jex, 2002). It is necessary to identify the needs of Roger. In this matter, it has been proven that he has already been given financial rewards in the forms of raises and bonuses and would not require these kinds of motivation. One of the needs that can be seen from this end is the desire to move away from boring routine tasks.

The focus of Roger’ s present needs is on the work itself, which may require the need for power, as explained by McClelland’ s Needs Theory. In this matter, it is considered as the need “ for responsibility for, control of, and authority over others” (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2007, p. 27). One of the approaches that can be taken by management in light of the need for power, as defined above, is giving Roger the power to define innovative ideas that could be incorporated into his work as he sees fit and agrees with management as to the approval of these.

Likewise, job enlargement could also help in this strategy such that he could be given additional authority in controlling other aspects of the workflow wherein some of the aspects of the manager’ s work could be distributed to him as his capabilities fit it.
