Obesity refers to the situation whereby the level of fat content in the body is high such that it poses a health risk. Obesity is assessed by indexes including the body mass index, BMI, which gives the measure of weight in relation to the height. In adults, BMI's of more than 30 is considered obese. Obesity is also measured in terms of the waist to hip ratio that gives a relationship of the fat content on one's waist and the fat the content on the hips and buttocks. A waist size larger than 40 inches for men and larger than 35 inches for women is considered overweight and poses the risks of heart disease and other illness related to overweight.
Cause of Obesity
Factors that cause obesity are complex, and it usually occurs if the intake of calories is more than the amount of energy one burns. The factors are usually a combination of environmental, genetic and psychological factors.
From studies, it is shown that obesity runs in the family through the genes. The family members also share foods and lifestyle habits, which are likely to contribute to obesity. The lifestyle habits are hard to separate from one's genetics.
One's environment including the food that one eats and the relative activity also play a significant part in contributing to obesity. Foods that have high-fat content increases the risks of obesity. One can lose weight by taking nutritious diets with low fats, engaging in physical exercises and reducing the portion sizes.
Psychological factors including sadness, boredom, anger and other negative emotions most of the people's eating habits. The overweight people are likely to experience elevated psychological disturbances more than the people with normal weight, and thus they tend to eat more food, which increases the chances of being obese.
