The rRNA shows strong conservation of structure across all organisms for bacteria from the Sargasso Sea. In addition, conservation of sequence is seen mainly in the double-stranded stems of the stem-loop structure. The bacterial divisions were based on more than 8000 rRNA sequences. During the cultivation of the ubiquitous SAR11 marine bacterioplankton clade, 26% of all rRNAs recovered from seawater samples. In addition, while isolating ‘uncultivable’ microorganisms in pure culture, in a simulated natural environment 99% of microorganisms resist cultivation.

For genes, which there are no primers, they learn how to isolate large amounts of cells from the environment. I chose to attend this lecture because it is related to my field of study (Health Studies), and I am interested to have an idea of the nature of the course that I will be studying as an undergraduate. It is related to my chosen field of study because it investigates how organisms respond to changes in their external environments and can help me understand how these organisms affect human health.

Before attending this lecture, I already knew that genome responses are diverse and one must integrate several fields for its research. From the lecture, I learnt that most microbes have never been cultured despite DNA-based comparisons being able to identify and categorize them. I learned that concentration on detail is my personal ability to follow and take notes, in a typical academic lecture. This assignment can be useful in helping me gauge the information I can learn within a given time, and, therefore, set realistic academic goals.
